Lancashire Telegraph - Accrington Stanley disappointed with QPR draw
- ACCRINGTON Stanley boss John Coleman has bemoaned his club’s luck after they missed out on Premier League opposition in the draw for the second round of the Carling Cup.
Instead Stanley have been handed a trip to QPR, with the tie likely to take place on August 25.
- The fixture will pit the cash-strapped Reds against one of the wealthiest clubs in England, with the Championship club currently owned by a consortium including the eighth richest man in the world, Lakshmi Mittal, as well as Formula 1 moguls Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone.
- But it is unlikely to be selected for live screening and may not provide Stanley with the financial boost they need as they attempt to pay off a £300,000 tax bill.
- “Obviously we wanted a money-spinner and I don’t think that will be a money-spinner,” said Coleman.
- “We’ll have to do the next best thing and beat them.
- “The way things have gone for us over the last couple of years, I wouldn’t be surprised if we were an orange and everyone else was a normal-sized ball in the draw!
- "We don’t ever seem to get a money-spinner. It’s the luck of the draw but we just need a leg up.”
- It will be the first meeting between the two clubs for almost 50 years.
- Stanley last faced QPR back in January 1960 in the old Division Four.
- The Reds booked their trip to Loftus Road after beating the Saddlers 2-1 on Tuesday night, with goals from Bobby Grant and Paul Mullin.
- The tie will be played on the week commencing August 24. Lancashire Telegraph
Two Year Flashback: The Takeover
QPR Official Site - August 14, 2007 - CLUB STATEMENT
- Antonio Caliendo, Chairman of QPR Holdings Ltd, has made the following announcement:
- "There have been many rumours spread in the newspapers recently about QPR.
"The Club is not for sale."

Sporting Life - QPR DENY TAKEOVER RUMOURS
- QPR have scotched reports of an imminent takeover at the west London club by declaring they are "not for sale".
The cash-strapped Hoops have been linked with a takeover by the boss of the Renault Formula One team Flavio Briatore and F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.
Chairman Gianni Paladini is thought to be willing to sell the Championship club, but has yet to find suitable investors.
But a statement from Antonio Caliendo, the chairman of QPR Holdings Ltd, on the club's official website, www.qpr.co.uk, has contradicted recent reports.
It read: "There have been many rumours spread in the newspapers recently about QPR. The club is not for sale.
"The club will be making no further comment at this stage.
Meanwhile in the Daily Mail that same day:
QPR Reportedly in Talks with THREE Different Consortiums-
Daily Mail - Two new parties join the talks to buy Rangers
- Queens Park Rangers are in talks with three different consortiums about a possible takeover.
- Sportsmail can reveal that two new parties are at the negotiating table with Rangers chiefs in addition to the consortium led by Renault F1 boss Flavio Briatore.
- One is believed to be British-based and the other is made up of foreign interests but it is understood that the Briatore bid is still considered the most 'attractive' by the Rangers board.
- Although it has been speculated that a deal with the flamboyant Italian businessman could be completed within days, negotiations are finely poised and no deal has been done.
- Antonio Caliendo, the chairman of QPR Holdings Ltd, flew into London last night as talks with the various parties stepped up.
- Privately, the QPR board have set a deadline for the end of the month for any takeover to be completed.
- There is a diminishing enthusiasm among the Monaco-based consortium who own 62 per cent of the club and include Caliendo, chairman Gianni Paladini and Brazil manager Dunga to pour any more money in as the threat of administration continues to hover over Loftus Road.
- The club are £21million in debt and struggling to meet their day-to-day running costs. Even the multi-million pound sales of Danny Shittu to Watford, Dean Parrett to Tottenham and Lee Cook to Fulham in the last 12 months have been unable to stem the cashflow problems.
- Furthermore, directors are owed unsecured loans worth between £5m-£7m and this sum would have to be written off were Rangers to go into administration for the second time in six years. By comparison, the £10m loan to the Panama-based ABC Corporation is secured against the ground, which is Ranger's most valuable asset and worth over £20m.
- It has been reported that any takeover of Rangers would cost around £30m, including around £10m to be handed to manager John Gregory to spend on new players.
- Thoughts about a takeover will momentarily be put to one side tonight as Leyton Orient visit for their Carling Cup encounter...."
PLYMOUTH PREVIEWS
QPR Official Site - THE FRIDAY PREVIEW: PILGRIMS
- The R's are back on the road to the West Country again this weekend, with a 470-mile round trip to Plymouth Argyle next on the agenda for Jim Magilton's men.
- Buoyed by a scintillating second half display against Exeter City in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night, Rangers will be confident of making it back-to-back wins at Home Park.
- Argyle, meanwhile, will be keen to bounce back from their defeat to lower league opposition on Tuesday evening.
- Paul Sturrock's men - who drew 1-1 at Crystal Palace on the opening day of the new season - succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Gillingham, to send them crashing out at the first hurdle.
- Team News
- Alejandro Faurlin (thigh), Martin Rowlands (ankle) and Lee Cook (knee) remain sidelined, whilst Angelo Balanta is a doubt with an ankle knock.
- Adel Taarabt and Heidar Helguson have returned from international duty for the R's and will be pushing for recalls, whilst Matt Connolly, Damion Stewart, Mikele Leigertwood, Hogan Ephraim, Akos Buzsaky, Rowan Vine and Patrick Agyemang will all be hoping they've done enough to keep their place in Magilton's starting XI.
- Plymouth are hopeful of recalling Carl Fletcher and Krisztian Timar, after the pair missed Tuesday's defeat to the Gills.
- Sturrock is praying that the influential duo will be back fit to steady the ship against the R's at Home Park.
- Star Man
Rory FALLON - Striker
Kiwi striker Rory Fallon 6ft 2in frame makes him a handful for many a Championship defender.
The front-man, who began his career in his native New Zealand, lists Barnsley, Swindon Town and Yeovil Town amongst his former Club.
Despite only hitting the back of the net on five occasions last season, Fallon is a potent threat, especially at set-pieces, where his heading ability comes to the fore.

QPR 0, Plymouth Argyle 0 - Saturday 25th April 2009 - Coca Cola Championship
The last match of the season at Loftus Road ended in a 0-0 stalemate, as QPR made Plymouth Argyle wait until the final fixture of the season for survival.
In a match of few clear-cut chances, it was the visitor's who largely created the better opportunities; Paul Gallagher going close on a number of occasions, whilst in the second half, Ashley Barnes was only denied a goal by a superb tackle from Kaspars Gorkss.
- For Rangers, Heidar Helguson, Mikele Leigertwood and Matt Connolly all had chances; Angelo Balanta gave an impressive cameo from the bench; whilst Patrick Agyemang returned from injury to play around an hour.
- But it stayed all square, despite a late Jamie Mackie sitter, as both sides settled for a point.

Plymouth Herald - New QPR boss Magilton is spoilt for choice up front
- QUEENS Park Rangers will be playing their second game in Devon in five days when they face Argyle tomorrow.
- The west London club won 5-0 away to newly-promoted League One outfit Exeter City at St James' Park on Tuesday.
That was after manager Jim Magilton made seven changes to his side from the 1-1 draw at home to Blackpool in their first Championship fixture of the season last Saturday.
Right-back Peter Ramage scored in the 86th minute of the game against Ian Holloway's Seasiders to secure a point for Rangers.
Striker Ben Burgess gave Blackpool the lead in the first half at Loftus Road.
- Magilton shook up his side for the trip to Exeter, with captain Martin Rowlands, key defender Fitz Hall and striker Heidar Helguson only included on the substitutes' bench.
- It was goal-less at half-time, and midfielder Wayne Routledge only opened the scoring in the 53rd minute.
But Routledge then went on to complete a 13-minute hat-trick, with his third goal coming from the penalty spot.
Recent signing Alessandro Pellicori, a 28-year-old Italian striker, made it 4-0 to Rangers before midfielder Hogan Ephraim completed the rout in the closing stages.
- Pellicori was snapped up by Magilton on a three-year contract after a pre-season trial period at Loftus Road.
He will compete for a place in the QPR attack with Helguson, Angelo Balanta, Patrick Agyemang and Rowan Vine, which is an impressive array of talent.
Magilton, 40, was appointed as Rangers' new manager in June on a two-year contract.
He had previously been the boss of Ipswich Town until April, when he was replaced by Roy Keane.
- Apart from Pellicori, there have not been many additions to the QPR squad this summer.
However, Morocco international midfielder Adel Taarabt has been recruited on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur.
The 20-year-old was borrowed by Rangers at the end of last season and scored one goal in seven games.
Rangers have been boosted by the return to fitness of talented former Argyle midfielder Akos Buzsaky after a nine-month lay-off following a cruciate knee ligament injury.
The 27-year-old did the damage in a 1-0 defeat away to Manchester United in the Carling Cup fourth round on November 1 last year.
- Buzsaky made his comeback for QPR as a 56th minute substitute against Blackpool and he then played the entire match against Exeter.
The Hungary international moved from Argyle to QPR, initially on loan, in October 2007, which was a month before Paul Sturrock began his second stint as Argyle manager.
But he is a player that the Pilgrims' boss has a lot of respect for.
"He's a very offensive player who scores goals," said Sturrock. "He reminds me of (Argyle transfer target) Alan Gow a wee bit in his style, and he has got a shot in both feet. I have seen him score some great goals on the TV." Plymouth Herald
Plymouth Herald - Sturrock urges Greens to start off a home run
- MANAGER Paul Sturrock wants Argyle to set the tone for their season by beating Queens Park Rangers in their first home game tomorrow.
And Sturrock is cautiously optimistic that midfielder Carl Fletcher and centre-back Krisztian Timar will both be passed fit after injuries.
- Argyle won only seven of their 23 home Championship matches last season, which almost led to them being relegated.
Sturrock knows his side will face another fight for survival unless their form at Home Park picks up.
So he is desperate for the Pilgrims to get off to a good start against QPR.
Sturrock said: "It's our first home game and it will set the tone for our season.
- "It's important we get on the front foot as far as the game is concerned and come out of it with a good result."
Argyle were beaten by Doncaster Rovers (3-0) and Barnsley (2-1) in their final two home matches of last season.
So they have not tasted success at Home Park since April 11, when they defeated Coventry City 4-0.
Sturrock said: "We had the worst home record in the league last season, and we don't want that to happen again because it would mean we would be fighting relegation.
- "If we can have even a mediocre season at home it will take us several places up the table, and that's what you are looking for."
Fletcher and Timar were both ruled out of the Carling Cup first round tie away to Gillingham on Tuesday.
Their absence was felt as the Pilgrims were beaten 2-1 by the newly-promoted League One outfit.
Fletcher was sidelined by a dead leg, which he suffered in the season-opening 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace last Saturday.
- And Timar, who was the Pilgrims' goalscorer at Selhurst Park, did not make the trip to Gillingham because of a sore ankle.
His injury was particularly untimely for Argyle because Chris Barker is still recovering from a torn calf muscle and Reda Johnson was on international duty for Benin.
So Gary Sawyer moved into the centre of defence, with Jim Paterson taking over from him at left-back.
Should Timar be fit to face QPR, then Sawyer will revert to left-back, with Paterson slotting into midfield.
But should Timar still be sidelined, then Johnson will partner Seip at centre-back.
- Johnson made only his second appearance for Benin in their 1-1 draw with Gabon in a friendly which was played in Dieppe, France, on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old played the whole match and, thankfully for Argyle, avoided any injury.
QPR opened their Championship campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Blackpool.
Then a much-changed side thrashed Exeter City 5-0 in the Carling Cup at St James' Park.
- Sturrock said: "We have had them watched in both of those games, and we have got the Pro-Zone analysis on them as well.
"But they have played two different teams over those last two games.
"So it's pot luck what personnel is going to play, but they have got some quality players all over the football pitch."
One of those is Wayne Routledge, a midfielder blessed with pace and trickery on the ball. Routledge scored a 13-minute hat-trick against Exeter, but Sturrock believes Argyle can contain him, as they did in a goal-less draw against Rangers at Loftus Road on the penultimate weekend of last season.
Sturrock said: "He was ordinary on that day because Gary Sawyer had a very good game against him and I'm expecting exactly the same again.
"But I would like to think that what we will be doing will be a negative for him.
Hopefully, he will have to do a lot of running going back up the park, rather than the other way."
Argyle had to be content with a 1-1 draw against QPR last season, after a late equaliser from striker Steve MacLean.
Sturrock said: "I think we gave them (QPR) as good as we got in both games last season, and I don't envisage it being any different this year" Plymouth Herald
