Mirror/Alan Nixon - Derby's Rob Hulse turns down Middlesbrough deal
- Derby County striker Rob Hulse was offered a major six-figure sum to leave the club and sign for Middlesbrough - in a deal that could be back on in a couple of weeks. Hulse surprisingly snubbed Boro after a £3 million fee was agreed, with the Rams handing him around £250,000 to make the transfer happen. However the far-travelled forward said 'no' despite also being offered a lucrative three-year deal at Gareth Southgate's club. Hulse will now go back to an uncertain future at Pride Park - where he knows he was being allowed to go - and Boro hope he will have a re-think and join them shortly.

Scunthorpe Telegraph - Joe Murphy: Iron should be looking to extend Hooper's stay
- Goalkeeper Joe Murphy is urging Scunthorpe United to tie Gary Hooper down to a long-term contract at Glanford Park – in a bid to fend off interested parties.
- Championship rivals QPR made a tentative enquiry about the availability of the striker on transfer deadline day this week, though talk of a £1million bid was rubbished by Iron chairman Steve Wharton.
- After speaking to the former Southend front man on the phone on hearing those rumours, Murphy says Hooper is more than happy with his present role at United.
- And while he thinks the fact that Rangers were told the striker was 'not for sale' is one of the most significant transfer moves of the summer for the Iron, the Irish shot-stopper would love to see the club extend Hooper's current contract, which is scheduled to run out in the summer of 2011.
- "I'm not surprised other Championship clubs are looking at Hoops because I knew from day one, in his very first training session with us, there was potential there," Murphy told the Telegraph.
"He pulled up trees in what was probably his first full season in football last year. He probably played the most games out of a lot of us at the club and consistently scored goals.
"I spoke to Hoops about the QPR talk and about being at Scunny in general and he's happy here.
"If the club offered him a new deal I'm sure he'd be keen to sign it, which is good for us because if we lost him we'd lose a massive goal threat."
United claimed they had first mooted the idea of offering Hooper a new improved deal towards the end of last season, with sides including Coventry City and Fulham said to be monitoring the player's progress.
- But the Telegraph understands those talks have been put on hold until next summer, when the striker will have a year left to run on his current contract.
Scunthorpe are cautious of moving things on at the present stage because Hooper will still be under 24 – meaning they are able to command a transfer fee if he leaves – at the end of his current deal. Scunthorpe Telegraph
