Wigan Today/Paul Kendrick - Loan Ranger vows to return stronger

- Latics midfielder Ben Watson is determined to ensure he won't be 'out of sight, out of mind' during his loan spell at Queens Park Rangers.
- The 24-year-old joined the Championship outfit on a four-month loan deal just before the transfer window slammed shut last week.
- Wigan boss Roberto Martinez was unable to guarantee him first-team football at the DW Stadium, and sanctioned the move to keep the player match-fit.
- Watson, too, was more than happy to go out on loan, and says he aims to make good use of the period between now and the New Year to play himself back into Martinez's plans.
- When asked if he still saw his long-term future at Wigan, Watson told the Evening Post: "Without a doubt.
- "I would imagine that there'll be people from Wigan coming down to watch me probably every week to see how I'm doing, so it's down to me to put in some good performances.
- "The move wasn't really a surprise to me. "It wasn't that I wasn't in the gaffer's plans, but I knew he wanted me to go out on loan.
- "He couldn't guarantee me games at the moment, which is fair enough.
- "So instead of me sitting in the stands or sitting on the bench and playing 10 minutes here and there, it was best for me to get out and play in week in, week out."
- Watson only arrived at Latics in January of this year, with then-boss Steve Bruce pipping a host of clubs to sign him from Crystal Palace.
- After overcoming initial injury problems, the former England Under-21 international soon settled into the side and notched goals in successive games against Sunderland and Hull in March that all-but secured Premier League status for another campaign.
- In all, Watson made 10 appearances as Latics ended the season in 11th position, although the situation changed dramatically when Bruce departed for Sunderland during the summer.
- After the arrival of Martinez and new midfielders including Mohamed Diame, Hendry Thomas and Jordi Gomez, Watson temporarily found himself on the fringes.
But he believes that a spell back in his native London can only help his long-term Latics ambitions.
- Watson added: "It's frustrating when you're out of the team, because all you want to do is play football.
- "But the manager picks the team and it's down to him who plays.
- "There's not really a lot you can do.
"You've just got to keep plugging away, keep working hard, keep doing what you're good at and hopefully you will eventually get your
chance.
- "I had options, but I'm looking forward to playing well for QPR.
"This is a club that is going places, and it's just a matter of finding some consistency in this league.
- "If you can find some consistency in the Championship, you will be in and around the automatic promotion places for the Premier League.
"I've come here to prove myself again, to play games, to win games and to play well." Wigan Today

- POSH will launch their bid for a Championship play-off place by gaining their first win of the season at QPR on Saturday.
That's the aim of manager Darren Ferguson who remains bullish about his side's promotion prospects despite a return of two points from the first five games of the season.
- Ferguson admits his comments are sure to cause a few raised eyebrows, but he believes his team's positive approach to matches will soon be yielding victories.
- Ferguson said: "There will be a lot of draws in the Championship this season so any team that can string a few wins together will climb the table quickly.
- "And we have shown in the past that we are a team capable of doing just that. Once we get our first win I am sure we will be and up running.
"It might seem a little strange right now to talk about challenging at the top, but we have a history of getting better as a season progresses.
"And the lads have been flying in training this week. They look fresh and lively and I'm confident of a good performance at QPR especially as we now have a fully fit squad.
"Obviously it's another tough match, but we will go there with our usual positive attitude and seek three points. We must carry on playing to our strengths while trying to cut out the errors at the other end."
- Ferguson was impressed with the display of the reserve team in winning 3-0 at Northampton earlier this week. Winger Chris Whelpdale scored a goal on his return from injury and could make a Posh squad for the first time this season at London Road.
- And Ferguson and Posh have been tipped to enjoy another productive season by the man in the opposition dug-out on Saturday, QPR manager Jim Magilton.
- Magilton has bad memories of facing Posh as his Ipswich side were knocked out of the Carling Cup at London Road in 2006 when the sides were two divisions apart.
- Magilton said: "The spectre of Darren's father looms over him so God only knows how he deals with that. But the way he conducts himself is great and he comes across as very much his own man, so I'm nothing but impressed with him especially after back to back promotions.
"I played against Darren many moons ago when he was at Man U and I was at Liverpool – I don't know if he'll remember – but I don't know him so well personally.
"Peterborough have also got a progressive chairman and a great director of football in Barry Fry and Saturday's match will be as tough as it gets because I am sure they will have another excellent season."
Saturday sees the start of a run of six matches in 18 days for Posh who also tackle Leicester (away, Sept 15), Reading (home, Sept 19), Blackpool (away, Sept 26) and Plymouth (home, Sept 29) in the Championship before the end of the month as well as a Carling Cup tie against Newcastle (home, Sept 22).
POSH defender Craig Morgan was on the Welsh bench for their World Cup clash with Russia in Cardiff last night. Morgan did not come on as the Russians won 3-1. Evening Telegraph
The Last QPR Peterborough meeting at Loftus Road

Kevin Gallen saved Rangers' blushes at Loftus Road this evening with a last gasp equaliser against a spirited Peterborough United.
Rangers' leading scorer latched on to Tony Thorpe's through ball and coolly slotted home to earn Rangers a point that looked beyond them as the clock ticked down.
Peterborough were devastated having stifled Rangers for long periods and a somewhat disjointed display from the home team had looked likely to send the Loftus Road faithful home with nothing - until Super Kev's strike at the death.
The Rangers manager had been forced to make two late changes to his starting line up, after Martin Rowlands and Chris Day failed late fitness tests.
Matthew Rose was handed a start on the right of midfield, whilst Nick Culkin stepped up to replace the injured Day. Kevin McLeod also returned to the left flank, after falling ill just prior to kick off last Saturday.
Peterborough created the first chance of the game, when Clive Platt got the better of Gino Padula.
He sent in a low cross that was met by Andy Clarke in the box and although Posh's top goalscorer connected with his first time volley, Nick Culkin held the shot.
Rangers then sprang into attack. Padula sent in a teasing cross which was met by the head of Paul Furlong, but was seen away for a corner by the rising Posh defence.
Rangers continued to apply the pressure, with Terrell Forbes sending in a powerful drive which kept rising over Mark Tyler's crossbar.
The home side then forced a corner in the 10th minute - Marc Bircham playing in Gallen who was closed down before he could get a strike away.
Padula then sent his cross to the far post, which Furlong headed goalward. However, Furlong's powerful effort was cleared awkwardly off the goal-line by Posh defender Sagi Burton - with appeals for hand ball waved away.
On 20 minutes Bircham made a piercing run through the heart of midfield. With the Posh defence backing off, Bircham took the ball inside the box, only to be felled while preparing to release his strike.
The Posh defender took the man rather than the ball, but again - play was allowed to continue
Gareth Jelleyman was forced out mid-way through the first half. Peterborough manager Barry Fry brought on Tommy Williams, who was welcomed back to Loftus Road with a mixture of boos and polite applause.
With only five minutes of the half remaining, Bircham won Rangers a free-kick 25 yards out from goal. Furlong and McLeod stood menacingly over the ball, with Furlong hitting his strike low after Palmer laid off the ball.
The ball ricocheted off legs and out wide to the right flank, with Rose forcing a corner from the follow up.
However, Peterborough were soon to take the lead, scoring in the 44th minute, and somewhat against the run of play. Williams sent in a delicious cross from deep on the left flank and Clive Platt rose unchallenged to head home from six yards out.
Posh had the first opportunity of the half, going close to doubling their lead. Curtis Woodhouse sent in a well weighted free-kick from the right flank, which found the feet of Peterborough's Mark Alber, who should have done better, turning his first time shot around Culkin's upright, much to the relief of the Rangers fans.
However, Rangers were intent of making inroads of their own. McLeod connected sweetly to a raking Marc Bircham ball which picked him out from 40 yards. However, McLeod saw his shot tipped over by Tyler in the Posh goal.
From the resulting Padula corner, Gallen volleyed from the clearance. His 25 yard shot sailed over a maze of bodies, but into the chest of Tyler.
A foul on Marc Bircham by Woodhouse then earned the Posh midfielder the first caution of the game on 52 minutes.
Seven minutes later, Ian Holloway rang the changes with no fewer than three substitutions.
Tony Thorpe came in attack to replace Furlong, while Richard Johnson came on for Palmer in the centre of midfield to make his first appearance in a Rangers shirt. Matthew Rose made way for Jamie Cureton.
However, only a minute later, Clarke Carlisle went down after colliding with Terrell Forbes. The Rangers defender was forced to leave the field, and the Rs continued with 10 men until Carlisle returned seven minutes later.
The injured Carlisle pushed up into attack, with Rangers throwing everything they could at the Posh defence. Bircham won another free-kick on 70 minutes, but Padula, this time, was too long on the cross.
Andy Clarke then made way for David Farrell as the Posh tried to firm things up - but it was Rangers who were on all-out attack.
First Gallen sent his shot sailing over the bar from close range on 75 minutes after latching onto a failed clearance. Then Cureton put through Thorpe two minutes later but the Posh 'keeper beat him to the ball.
Rangers continued to press, but Peterborough went close again to catching Rangers on the break. Goalscorer Platt bored down on goal, forcing Culkin to come off his line.
Culkin, well out of his box, met the rising ball, colliding with Platt, but clearing the danger, and earning a caution for his troubles.
With four minutes of time added, Rangers continued to search for an equaliser. And it came, created by the initial touch from make-shift forward Carlisle, who found Thorpe running through on goal, slipping it to Gallen - who found the back of the net.
Rangers weren't satisfied and wanted more than a point for their troubles, but in the end it wasn't to be, and they were forced to settle for a draw.
