Fan Blog/Daily Mirror - By Jesse Whittock - Why Jim Magilton has got QPR fans thinking he may not be the man to win promotion
- So, QPR’s record after six games is a paltry seven points. That is seven fewer than this time last season and works out to 1.16 points per game. Preston North End, who took the final playoff spot in 2008/09, finished with 74 points from 46 games – or 1.6 points a game. In short, we’re playing catch-up already, both with our rivals and our supposedly weaker squad of the last campaign.
- Consider this: if we keep to the same point scoring rate throughout the season, based on last season’s finishing positions we would find ourselves finishing in 18th position – making that Times newspaper prediction we all scoffed at spot on.
- So what did the 1-1 draw with Peterborough - our third home league draw of the season in three games - teach us? Well, basically nothing, because everyone knows our weaknesses and strengths: They’re evident every time we play. But, for the sake of this argument, let’s consider them for a minute.
- The defence isn’t quite as solid as last season, although I wouldn’t consider it the main squad issue. We also know the forward line is one of the weakest in the division and requires desperate attention in the January transfer window. (And that means not signing another teenage Arsenal reserve). But most concerning for me, it is also becoming apparent Magilton doesn’t know what his best team is – hence the constant tinkering with the midfield and the unnecessary signing of Ben Watson from Wigan.
- Today, we saw Akos Buzsaky once again make way for Alejandro Faurlin, who is yet to prove himself to the fans, while Hogan Ephraim, Adel Taarabt and Watson completed the midfield quadrangle. That selection meant that Rangers have not had the same four midfield players start two games in a row at all this season, and worryingly, none of the eight combinations tested have satisfied the manager.
- Magilton had pre-season to experiment – now is not the time to be guessing your best eleven. I’ve always said you should give a manager a full year to make his make his mark but the alert signs in my head are already sounding: If he can’t pick a consistent team, he’s not going to make the right decisions about other things, such as signings and substitutions. The response from fans I talk to is becoming more and more uniformed: The more they see, the more they’re thinking Jim is probably not the man to win the club promotion. I hope we’re all wrong.
- The other main story of this week, which I’m not going in to depth about due to not knowing the all the facts and the likelihood of the case going to court, is Briatore’s potential troubles over ‘Crashgate’. Nelson Pique Jr’s claims that Flav’s Renault team ordered him to crash his car on purpose have hit the sporting world hard and fast, a bit like the crash itself. The concern for QPR fans is, if the case ends up in court, would it be any surprise if Flav’s mind isn’t necessarily thinking about getting Rangers promoted? - Jesse Whittock/Mirror

- Magilton is confident in his ability to be his own man at Loftus Road
Queens Park Rangers may strengthen their squad with loan signings in the coming weeks.
- Manager Jim Magilton has already taken Arsenal striker Jay Simpson and Wigan midfielder Ben Watson on loan since the start of the season.
- He told BBC London 94.9: "If a good player comes along we're going to pitch for him and if we get him them great.
- "But if it falls short I've got enough cover at this club and enough quality. We managed to secure Jay and Ben."
- "That came out of the blue for a lot of people, but certainly not for us because we'd been trailing both players all through pre-season." BBC
