Shaun Derry reckons Rangers will be there or thereabouts this season

John was loved wherever he played.
QPR have had a bewildering number of managers over the last couple of years but they finally appear to have found the right man for the job in Neil Warnock.
Rangers have not spent heavily over the summer but the Hoops are still fancied to feature prominently in the Championship promotion race this season. And QPR started their campaign in the best possible way with a 4-0 victory against Barnsley at Loftus Road on Saturday.
Adel Taarabt, Jamie Mackie, Heidar Helguson and Fitz Hall were the men on target for Warnock’s men and givemefootball logged the thoughts of experienced midfielder Shaun Derry, who arrived on a free transfer in the off-season.
Q: YOU MUST HAVE BEEN DELIGHTED WITH THE RESULT AT THE WEEKEND?
A: Yes, I think we had about four or five debuts on Saturday, and that can be difficult in itself. We had a new goalkeeper and new full backs so it was it was pleasing also to start the new season with a clean sheet.
Q: AND OF COURSE, QPR ARE PROMINENT IN THE BETTING TO WIN PROMOTION THIS TERM?
A: The team has been backed for the last couple of years but we are probably one of 12 or 13 clubs who will be hoping to win promotion. So, we’re one of many and we are not getting above ourselves just because we’ve had one good result.
Q: AND IT WAS ALSO A GOOD RESULT FOR YOUR OLD CLUB PALACE AFTER A 3-2 WIN AGAINST LEICESTER?
A: It was an unbelievable result for them. I came off with about ten minutes to go and Nigel the physio, who used to be at Crystal Palace, told me they were 3-0 up at half time and I couldn’t believe it. I knew they had a lot of young players in the starting line-up so for them to hold on and get the win, I’m delighted for them.
Q: YOU MUST BE PLEASED TO BE WORKING WITH NEIL WARNOCK AGAIN – AND HE MUST BE RELISHING THE PROSPECT OF ANOTHER CRACK AT THE PREMIERSHIP?
A: Well, he definitely wants it, the hunger and the drive is still there – he says it’s probably more so now than ten or 15 years ago. He knows he’s at the right club and we’re very fortunate to have the financial backing that we have. If we can keep in and around the top six hopefully we can get that backing at the right time to improve the squad.
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP THIS SEASON?
A: I don’t think there is going to be an outstanding team this season. If you look at Newcastle and West Brom last year, you would have backed those two clubs to go up. You can’t really put your name on any club this season because, as I’ve said, there are 12 or 13 sides who are trying to do the same job.

QPR Official Site - HILL: THERE'S A LONG WAY TO GO
Posted on: Mon 09 Aug 2010
Clint Hill insists he and his team-mates aren't getting carried away by the stunning start they made to the new campaign on Saturday.
Hill was one of five players to make their debuts for QPR in the 4-0 win over Barnsley and, while the result was impressive, the 32-year-old is quick to point out there is a long, long way to go.
"It's one game, we can't get carried away by it," he told www.qpr.co.uk. "There's another 45 to go so you can't read anything into it. The season is a long, hard slog - we're going to have our ups and our downs.
"It's important that we keep level-headed and see where that takes us."
Goals from Heidar Helguson, Jamie Mackie, Adel Taarabt and Fitz Hall gave the R's an impressive opening day triumph in W12, and Hill admitted: "The team performance was pretty good, really. To score four goals in your first game of the season is always a bonus.
"The game was actually a lot tougher than the scoreline suggests. They had a few chances when it was 1-0, so it could have gone either way at that stage.
"The lads were tremendous. It was a physical battle, but that's what it is going to be like for most of the season so we have to be prepared for that.
"There will be a few teams who will play football, but for 90 per cent of it, it's going to be a right battle. That's what this league is all about, and that's why it is so entertaining.
"We've got to roll our sleeves up and win the battle first and foremost - then the footballers in our team can go and win us the game."
Paddy Kenny, Bradley Orr, Shaun Derry and Mackie joined Hill in making their first starts for the R's, and the former Crystal Palace defender revealed the team spirit in the camp is already strong.
"Over the pre-season the lads have stuck together, gelled really well and socialised so we've got a brilliant team spirit here," he added.
"And that's so important - It's massive, absolutely massive. A strong team spirit can get you anywhere."
Adel Taarabt, who signed a permanent deal with QPR just 48 hours before kick off, was the star of the show with a stunning individual display. His impact was certainly noticed by the QPR left back.
"There were glimpses in the game on Saturday where he was just fantastic," said Hill. "You look at him and think he should be in the Barcelona team, or something like that!
"Like every player, he has his faults but we've got lads in the team who can complement him and do the things that he can't do.
"Adel can go out there and win us the games, while me and a few of the other boys can concentrate on doing the ugly bits. I've got no problem with that as long as we win games and get to where we want to be."
Hill and his team-mates are now preparing for tomorrow evening's Carling Cup tie against Port Vale at Loftus Road.
While the league remains the Club's priority, Hill said: "We're looking to win this and progress. It's about getting some momentum together and taking that into the rest of the season. QPR
