- QUEENS PARK RANGERS 6, CHELSEA 0- Easter Monday, March 31 1986 - Canon League Division One
- A glorious Easter Monday as Rangers smashed home six goals to kill off Chelsea's League title hopes.
- The R's went into this match in 14th place in the table. Chelsea were fourth and needed the points to rekindle their faltering challenge for the championship - especially after a 4-0 defeat against West Ham at Stamford Bridge on the Saturday.
- It was a windy morning with intermittent rain showers peppering our Omniturf pitch, which had been much-criticised by Chelsea chairman Ken Bates earlier in the season.
- For the first time in the history of this fixture, advance ticketing arrangements meant that there were no Chelsea fans infiltrating the Loft terrace. Cash admission was not permitted on the day so Rangers enjoyed terrific support from the all-ticket home end.
- It took the Super Hoops only eight minutes to open the scoring. John Byrne's initial shot was charged down but Gary Bannister followed up to drill into the bottom right hand corner from an acute angle at the School End.
-Cries of "Bann-is-ter...Bann-is-ter...Bann-is-ter..." (to the American marching tune) and "You're Not Singing Anymore..." rang out from the Loft terrace as the 4,000 Chelsea fans at the other end looked on in stunned silence.
- Rangers doubled their advantage on 25 minutes. Byrne was involved again with a right wing cross, Terry Fenwick nodded the ball on and Bannister arrived in the six yard box to head home. A very noisy rendition of "Singing The Blues..." followed from the Loft.
- A minute before the break, John Byrne picked up possession just inside the Chelsea half and lost his marker with a deft drop of the shoulder. He then dribbled past another four startled defenders amidst an orgy of skill before lashing into the net from just inside the box.
- It was the most spectacular R's goal of the season and our fans rejoiced with versions of "John-ny Byrne, John-ny Byrne, John-ny Byrne" (against using the marching tune) and "Easy...Easy.."
- The fourth came on 58 when Bannister tore away from the shambolic Chelsea back line and sent a low bullet-like shot into the right hand corner. Even the QPR stewards on the side of the pitch at the Loft End jumped up and down to celebrate. Meanwhile, the electronic scoreboard declared: "GARY HAT-TRICK BANNISTER"
- Then on 64 minutes, Bannister whipped in a low cross from the right and Byrne provided a crisp finish for goal number five with the Chelsea rearguard in shreds. The Loft boys bounced around in unison with chants of "Blame The Pitch, Blame The Pitch, Blame The Pitch..." directed at the ashen-faced Ken Bates in the main stand.
- Chelsea had striker David Speedie sent off two minutes later for flattening Ian Dawes with his elbow. The Rangers fans waved theatrically while singing "Bye Bye Speedie, Bye Bye Speedie..." (to the tune of Auld Lang Syne) as he plodded dejectedly from the arena.
- The sixth blue and white hooped goal in Chelsea's net came in the 82nd minute. Substitute Leroy Rosenior ran from the halfway line through a wide open defence before firing firmly past despairing goalkeeper Steve Francis. The jubilant Loft bellowed "We Want Seven...We Want Seven..." as the visiting fans headed for the exits.
- Chelsea manager John Hollins said afterwards: "It's been a very bad Easter for us, but I want to give QPR full credit for their performance."

- "Probably the best game was when we beat Chelsea 6-0 at Loftus Road on Easter Monday 1986," recalls Byrne.
- "I'll never forget that day! It was just one of those occasions when everything went right for us. Banna was on fire - he scored a hat-trick and I got a couple too.
- "I remember one of my goals where I picked up possession on the halfway line. It was funny on that plastic pitch, because bodies would fall all around you if you got into your stride. So eventually I wriggled free and slotted a shot into the bottom corner.
- "There were some big name players in the Chelsea line-up, including centre-back Doug Rougvie who seemed like he wanted to kill somebody when the score was 5-0! He was certainly looking for blood!
- "We had the Milk Cup Final coming up and I remember saying to Banna with about 15 minutes to go 'I ain't going anywhere near Rougvie'. And Gary replied 'Neither am I!' So we both ended up playing on the wings with no one in the middle!... QPR
Ben Kosky/Kilburn Times! - The day when QPR had six appeal
- QPR fans are basking in the feel-good factor right now – but it can’t come close to the euphoric mood that engulfed Loftus Road almost exactly 25 years ago.
As they savour the prospect of facing Chelsea on equal terms again next season, Rangers fans of a certain age will fondly recall probably their most memorable derby day triumph of all time, on Easter Monday - March 31, 1986.
There could be little doubt as to who ruled the roost in west London at that time after Rangers – who had won at Stamford Bridge two months earlier to knock Chelsea out of the League Cup – subjected their neighbours to a 6-0 thrashing.
Gary Bannister wrote his name into QPR folklore with a hat-trick – a feat he would repeat against Chelsea 18 months later – while strike partner John Byrne scored twice and Chelsea’s David Speedie was sent off before substitute Leroy Rosenior banged in number six.
And Rangers centre-back Steve Wicks, who had previously played for Chelsea and would later return to the Blues for a second spell, realised exactly what the scale of victory meant to the home crowd.
Wicks, who now helps out on matchdays at Loftus Road in a corporate hospitality role, told the Times: “I think we were always perceived as the smaller club, and that day felt like we’d taught big brother a lesson.
“I used to mix with some of the Chelsea players when I was at QPR and some of them were full of themselves, they thought they were better than they were.
“But QPR always used to beat them and, when we had our best side of that period under Terry Venables, with players like Simon Stainrod, Clive Allen and John Gregory, they weren’t even in our division.
“We were the established First Division side and Chelsea were the new kids on the block, but they still felt they were the bigger club. That day, though, we just played brilliantly from the first whistle.
“Everything we tried came off and I felt that, the way we were playing, it could be a real rout. I remember looking at the clock when the fifth goal went in and realising we’d still got well over 20 minutes to go.
“It was a great day for all QPR fans. In all the years I played for QPR, that game and the 5-5 draw with Newcastle are the two I’ll always remember.
“Chelsea were actually going quite well at that time – David Speedie and Kerry Dixon were scoring regularly, but our team was based on a strong defensive unit and we felt if we kept them quiet we could take the game by the scruff of the neck.
“Teams would come to Loftus Road, panic a bit and hit long balls and, when you’ve got two guys who are six foot plus at the back – myself and Alan McDonald – that was just playing into our hands.”
At the time, few teams enjoyed visiting Loftus Road – not only because of the goal threat posed by Bannister and Byrne, but also the artificial surface, with its unpredictable bounce, that had been installed in 1981.
Chelsea chairman Ken Bates was an outspoken critic of the Omniturf pitch but, as Wicks reveals, it became something of a psychological mountain for Blues players after their humbling in 1986.
“We’d absolutely dominated the game when we played Chelsea in the cup quarter-final that year, but they got a late equaliser, so we had to go to Stamford Bridge for a replay,” Wicks recalled.
“You wondered if we might have missed our chance. Also, Ken Bates had written that article in the programme, saying ‘now we’ve got them on grass, we’ll show them how to play’.
“When Michael Robinson scored to put us through, it was the most wonderful feeling. What made it special for me was that I was captain for the replay, because Terry Fenwick was called away on England duty.
“But the 6-0 became almost a mental thing for Chelsea. When I was playing for them a year or two later at Loftus Road, there were still a lot of players who’d been involved in that game and they went onto the plastic pitch with trepidation.
“Pat Nevin, for instance, was one of the most skilful players I played with and it should have been a dream surface for him, but it didn’t work out that way and Gary Bannister scored another hat-trick.
“Gary was a very good finisher on that plastic pitch – he knew just how the ball would run, he anticipated the bounce so well and made Chelsea pay again.”
While Rangers fans can at least await the prospect of regaining a genuine derby fixture for the first time since their Division Two tussles with Brentford, Wicks acknowledges that the club have some distance to go before they can dream of lording it over Chelsea once more.
“It’s important that the people in charge of the club understand that, if you’re going into the Premier League, there’s got to be substantial investment,” added the 54-year-old.
“Don’t get me wrong, the lads in the squad have done a brilliant job this season – people like Paddy Kenny and Shaun Derry have been outstanding – and they should keep a lot of them, but they will need more Premier League quality.
“Playing Chelsea again will be fantastic. I love hearing the crowd singing ‘come on you Rs’ when the ground’s full – it’s a special atmosphere and very different to what Chelsea will be used to.
“I hope West Ham stay up because games against them were always good occasions too. With Arsenal, Spurs and Fulham as well, there are so many things for QPR fans to look forward to.”

Paul Warburton/Gazette - Cook makes QPR vow
- LEE Cook believes that if QPR get promoted to the Premiership – they will be a match for anyone in the second half of the table.
- The winger is hoping to return to the Championship leaders before the end of the season after recovering from injury, and reckons anything Wolves can do – his beloved Hoops can do just as well.
- He said: "You look at Wolves and I think our squad is as good as theirs – and they’ve beaten Man U and Chelsea this season.
- "The top seven are a level above – but the rest from 11 to bottom are all the same.
- "It’s not going to be easy, but I’m confident we won’t drop out at the first go. We’ve got the quality and got the workers – and it’s a great mix."
- Lifelong fan Cook even gave back a £250,000 signing-on fee to Rs when he signed for Fulham in 2007, and revealed the in-joke when keeper Lee Camp was at the club was that Cook ‘owned’ him.
- He explained: "I used to give Lee gip when I returned to Rangers from Fulham.
- "Because we bought him for £250,000 – I used to tell him I owned him. It was a lot of money – and I wouldn’t have done it for anyone, but at the time we were struggling financially. Then six weeks later they supposedly became the richest club in the country.
