BERNIE ECCLESTONE: 'PRISON? I WILL LEAD F1 FOR YEARS’ (And No Briatore "Involvement")
- BERNIE ECCLESTONE has warned critics that, far from being locked up in a German prison, he plans to be in control of Formula One for years to come.
- “I will be doing what I do best for a while yet – making good deals to keep a lot of people happy and well off in F1,” said Bernie Ecclestone, 80.
- “Some might not want me to continue but I enjoy what I do. That is what I’ll be judged on.”
- German banker Gerhard Gribkowsky is being investigated by authorities and claims he was paid £27million by Ecclestone in 2005 when F1 was being sold. Ecclestone says he made a payment because Gribkowsky, who was chief risk officer at Bayern LB, which sold a 47 per cent stake in F1 to the current owners, CVC, was “shaking me down”.
- Former Renault F1 boss and Ecclestone’s friend, Flavio Briatore, has been mentioned in the German tax probe.
- “In no shape or form is Briatore involved in this,” said Ecclestone.
- “He did make a payment for me but only because I asked him after this man Gribkowsky threatened to make trouble for me and said he did not want the money paid direct from the UK.
- Briatore did me a favour and, far from being dragged into this, I told the German prosecutor about it. That is how his name has appeared.”
- Ecclestone also says that, contrary to reports, his Formula One Management lawyers have not been investigated, although several connected to his family trust, Bambino, have spoken to the German authorities. “Neither have my company lawyers been investigated,” he said. “I don’t worry about this a bit. The end [for me]? Of course not.”
- Asked if he would be around for another couple of years, Ecclestone said: “Are you restricting me? If I can keep delivering, that’s all I need to do.”

TALKSPORT - Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole is on the verge of a loan move to QPR.
- The England international just needs to agree personal terms with Neil Warnock's men before penning a year-long deal at Loftus Road.
- It's understood a third of Cole's wages will be funded by Liverpool.

Jacob Murtagh/Fulham Chronicle - Keeper set for QPR talks
- QPR boss Neil Warnock will hold talks with keeper Brian Murphy this week with a view to offering him a deal at Loftus Road.
- The former Ipswich Town shotstopper has been on trial in W12, and played 45 minutes of last night's 4-2 friendly win at Crawley Town.
- And Warnock plans to speak to the Irishman before the weekend about his future.
- He said: “I like Brian. He's done ever so well and we'll probably talk to him before the weekend.” Fulham Chronicle

- Neil Warnock expects the future of QPR trialist Bruno Perone to be decided next week.
- The Brazilian centre-back has featured throughout Rangers’ pre-season campaign and would have played the entire match against Crawley on Tuesday had he not picked up a head injury.
- Perone was initially regarded by Rangers as highly unlikely to be retained, but his performances have led manager Warnock to take a longer look.
- “He’s a good player who can also play in midfield,” said Warnock.
- “I think he’s done well and I really want to see him play a full 90 minutes. I’d hoped it’d be against Crawley but it wasn’t to be.
- “I’ve no doubt he could get another club over here, but he’s been keen to stay with us. I’d expect to make a decision on that probably towards the end of next week.”
- Former Ipswich goalkeeper Brian Murphy, who has also been on trial with the R’s, will be offered a contract. West London Sport

- There will be no reprieve for Lee Cook at QPR despite his impressive performance against Crawley.
- Cook, on as a half-time substitute, showed glimpses of his former self, scoring a goal and producing a number of useful crosses in Tuesday‘s pre-season friendly.
- But manager Neil Warnock later insisted he still expects the injury-plagued winger, who is in his second spell at Rangers, to move on before the start of the season.
- The same applies to Martin Rowlands, who like Cook was not given a squad number for the new campaign and has known for some time that he is surplus to requirements at Loftus Road.
- Warnock said: “I was pleased for Lee that he scored that goal. He had a good game and he’s done ever so well really.
- “He needs to play though, and he wants to play. I’m sure he’ll move on and the same applies to Martin Rowlands. To be honest, I’m surprised somebody hasn’t come in for them before now.” West London Sport

- NEIL Warnock insists he's got other irons in the fire if he misses out on Southampton star Jason Puncheon.
- QPR have had bid accepted for the wantaway winger, who has not been given a squad number by the Saints for the coming campaign.
- But Warnock has already missed out Wayne Routledge this summer, and admits he's got other targets lined up in case he fails to land Puncheon.
- He said: “The clubs have spoken to see what the situation is but there's nothing concrete.
- “We lost out on Routledge and you've got to have a different plan for certain games, particularly away from home.
- "Certainly Routledge showed that pace can help, and I think you need that as well. He wanted to come back but it's one of those things.
- “Puncheon's one of those names that have been mentioned but we've got a couple of other irons in the fire. It's not cut and dry with anybody at the moment.” Fulham Chronicle

Neil Warnock was all smiles after seeing his QPR side clinch a 4-2 victory in their second to last fixture of the pre-season campaign at Crawley Town.
Kaspars Gorkss, Heidar Helguson (2) and Lee Cook were on target for the R's, who are now just 11 days away from their opening Premier League clash with Bolton at Loftus Road.
Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk moments after the final whistle, Warnock said: "I couldn't have planned a pre-season much better than we've had.
"It's gone just how we wanted it to. We came to Crawley last year and you could see how much both sides have improved in 12 months.
"It was a good night for everybody and there were some positive performances too."
R's striker Helguson bagged a brace, and Warnock continued: "It's good to give lads like Heidar a run-out - he's not played for the past couple of weeks with injury and he got an hour or so.
"I thought he took his two goals well. There's goals in Heidar. He's our Kevin Davies! He really is a good professional.
"He doesn't want to lose anything and that's why he's playing like he is."
He added: "You have to have a good attitude against teams like Crawley. They're a good Club, strong and they pestered us. That's just what we needed.
"And it'll be the same on Friday against Luton - that'll be another big test.

Two for Helguson in QPR win - Crawley Town 2 QPR 4
Heidar Helguson scored twice as QPR continued their pre-season campaign with another win.
Kaspars Gorkss and Lee Cook also found the net for Rangers, who rested a number of first-team players ahead of Friday’s friendly at Luton.
They controlled most of this match and took an early lead when Gorkss’ header from Akos Buzsaky’s left-wing corner was blocked, and the Latvian followed up by smashing the loose ball into the net.
Gorkss was paired at the back with Bruno Perone, a Brazilian defender Rangers initially did not regard as a likely signing, but whose performances have led them to extend his pre-season stay.
There was also another appearance by former Ipswich goalkeeper Brian Murphy, whose move to QPR following his recent trial is expected to be confirmed soon.
Murphy played the first half and spent much of it watching his opposite number Scott Shearer being kept busy.
Shearer could not stop Gorkss’ opener, but the experienced Crawley keeper then did well to hold Buzsaky’s free-kick and even better to push away Matt Connolly’s 30-yarder.
When Murphy was finally called upon, he dived to his left to brilliantly to keep out Ben Smith’s acrobatic effort.
Rangers went further ahead early in the second half. Cook created some space for himself near the edge of the penalty box and drove the ball into the danger area, where an unmarked Helguson finished from close range.
Cook, on as a half-time substitute, looked surprisingly sharp for a man who has seen so little match action. As well as his goal he produced some nice touches and a couple of useful crosses.
His assist for Helguson’s goal put Rangers firmly in command, but Crawley halved the deficit on 57 minutes courtesy of Charlie Wassmer’s header.
Rangers’ two-goal lead was restored when Buzsaky found himself through on goal and drew Shearer from his line before cleverly teeing up Helguson, who had the simple task of slotting into an empty net.
Cook netted QPR’s fourth with a thunderous shot that beat Shearer at his near post, before Troy Hewitt missed a late chance by heading wide from fellow substitute Michael Doughty’s cross.
Rangers switched off for both Crawley’s goals, the second of which came when Scott Neilson set up Wassmer to score his second of the night. WestLondonSport

Heidar Helguson was at the double, as the R's clinched a 4-2 victory in their penultimate fixture of the pre-season campaign at Crawley Town tonight (Tuesday).
In what will no doubt prove to be another profitable work-out for Neil Warnock's men ahead of the new Barclays Premier League season, Rangers were ahead on 11 minutes, after Kaspars Gorkss struck following an Akos Buzsaky corner.
The R's doubled their advantage three minutes after the break, as Helguson tapped home a Lee Cook centre from close range, before Crawley pulled one back courtesy of Charlie Wassmer on 58 minutes.
Helguson added his second goal of the match on 67 minutes, before Cook put the visitors out of touch 10 minutes from time.
And there was even time for Wassmer to add his second and a Crawley consolation on 88 minutes, with the defender sliding home after good work from Scott Neilson down the right.
Helguson returned for Rangers, who stuck with their tried and trusted 4-2-3-1 formation at the Broadfield Stadium.
The Icelandic front-man travelled but didn't feature on our tour of Italy, and he joined former Ipswich keeper and trialist Brian Murphy in the starting XI, who lined-up in goal for QPR.
Bradley Orr, trialist Bruno Perone, Gorkss and Matt Connolly made up the R's rearguard.
Ali Faurlin and Buzsaky were in defensive midfield, behind the attacking trio of Tommy Smith, Petter Vaagan Moen and Hogan Ephraim.
Helguson led the Rangers line up top.
QPR almost edged themselves in front on nine minutes.
Helguson's flick-on after a ball from deep put Smith through on goal and, when the R's attacker lobbed the advancing Scott Shearer, his effort was cleared off the line for a corner kick.
However, from the resultant set-piece, Rangers took a deserved lead.
Buzsaky - who had been instrumental in some free-flowing QPR football early on - was the instigator, after he sent over a teasing cross from the left that the hosts failed to deal with.
The loose ball fell for Gorkss, with the defender making no mistake from close range, smashing an effort on the half volley into the roof of the net.
Buzsaky then forced a smart save from Shearer on 20 minutes, who did well to gather the Magical Magyar's swerving free-kick from 30-yards out at his chest.
Just a minute later, Shearer was again called into action to tip Connolly's stunning effort - that seemed destined to find the top right-hand corner - on to the bar and over.
Rangers appeared good value for their early lead and Gorkss almost grabbed a second goal on 26 minutes, heading Vaagan Moen's corner from the right over the target.
Two minutes later, the home side could - and probably should - have drawn level.
Glenn Wilson's delivery from a free-kick on the right was of perfection, as the ball looped over Orr at the back post before Wassmer prodded an effort inches wide of the target.
Josh Simpson's shot from the edge of the box forced a smart stop from Murphy on 34 minutes, before John Akinde nodded an effort just over the bar five minutes later, following Dean Howell's pinpoint cross from the left.
Crawley improved as the half wore on and almost grabbed a leveller on 42 minutes. Akinde's flick-on found Thomas, whose spin and shot was deflected just wide of Murphy's right-hand post.
R's boss Warnock rang the changes at the break, with Radek Cerny, Patrick Agyemang, Peter Ramage, Cook and Danny Shittu all brought on to replace Murphy, Smith, goalscorer Gorkss, Faurlin and Perone.
Three minutes after the break, Rangers were two goals to the good.
Clever foot work from substitute Cook allowed him to find space before dragging a centre across the face of goal, where Helguson was on hand at the back post to double the R's advantage.
Akinde went close on 51 minutes, before the hosts pulled a goal back seven minutes later.
Kyle McFadzean's corner from the right was inch-perfect, as he found the head of Wassmer before the Town centre-half nodded an effort past Cerny and into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.
Crawley almost equalised on 65 minutes. Neilson raced clear of the R's defence before Cerny raced off his line to fashion a fine block from the substitute's close-range effort, with Orr also on hand to put the ball out for a corner.
On 67 minutes, however, the R's restored their two-goal advantage.
The lively Cook freed Buzsaky and, as the Hungarian midfielder raced through on goal, he unselfishly squared the ball to Helguson, who rounded the keeper before adding his second strike of the evening.
Troy Hewitt and Michael Doughty were introduced on 70 minutes, with the latter flashing an effort just wide shortly after his arrival.
Doughty - along with Cook - produced number of nice touches after coming from the bench, and it was that duo who were on hand to serve up a fourth for Rangers.
Midfield man Doughty evaded two challenges before passing the ball across the face of the hosts' box - and what followed was an unstoppable strike, as Cook lashed an effort into the top-left hand corner of the net.
There was even time for a Crawley second on 88 minutes. Neilson's cut back found defender Wassmer 10 yards from goal, who slid home his second strike of the night.
