"The Four Year Plan" Coming to BBC 2

Broadcast Now/Jake Kanter - BBC2 buys rights to Ad Hoc’s QPR story

The tempestuous boardroom activities at Queens Park Rangers Football Club are the focus of a documentary acquired by BBC2.

The channel has picked up the rights to Ad Hoc Films’ award-winning The Four Year Plan from distributor Mercury Media.

The film provides unprecedented access to the QPR executive team after the club was rescued from bankruptcy in 2007 by billionaire backers Flavio Briatore, Bernie Ecclestone, Lakshmi Mittal and Amit Bhatia.

The doc follows their four-year strategy to restore QPR to the Premier League, providing an intimate insight into the controversies and decisions taken.

The acquisition was brokered by Carol Sennett, the BBC’s executive producer, programme acquisition, and Mercury Media chief executive Tim Sparke.

The Four Year Plan won best documentary at the Marbella International Film Festival and has also been picked up by Norway’s TV2. It has won the praise of high-profile sports journalists.

“It will appeal not just to football fans but to anyone who loves a great story,” said Sennett. Broadcast Now

West Ham Co-Chairman David Sullivan re Tony Fernandes

D: What happened with Tony Fernandes?

DS: He was trying to buy the club when we were trying to buy the club. He’s very tricky, Tony. I won’t say any more than that. He told a few pork pies to us. What he said this year, his offer was ridiculous. He wanted to put a little bit of money into the club – and I mean ‘a little bit’ – to take 51% of the club. We didn’t have 51% to sell really, as it would have left us with 13% between us. We’d have been giving him our shares. It was a ludicrous offer. But he’s certainly pumped some money into Queen’s Park Rangers. It will be interesting to see if they stay up or go down. Tony is a charming, charismatic man, a fantastic salesman, very good at talking..."
