London 24- Briatore: My time at QPR was a ‘disaster’ but I stand by my manager sackings

Former QPR chairman Flavio Briatore has described his time at the helm of the Loftus Road outfit as a ‘disaster’
The Italian bought the Loftus Road outfit in 2007 and sold his stake in 2010.
His time in charge of the R’s was traumatic and managers came and went on a regular basis.
It was not a happy time for him away from football as the Renault F1 team had started to struggle and in 2008 Nelson Piquet Junior deliberately crashed at the Singapore Grand Prix to help his then team-mate Fernando Alonso win the race.
For this act he was banned from F1 for life, although that was overturned on appeal.
While the ban was in place the Football League wanted information as his ban may have placed him in breach of the ‘fit and proper persons’ test.
With all this controversy, the Italian decided to sell his stake in QPR to his original partner and F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.
The Italian stepped back temporarily and, although Rangers reached the Premier League in 2011, in-fighting at boardroom level cast a shadow on that achievement.
In August 2011 Briatore sold the club to Tony Fernandes and has now admitted that he didn’t enjoy his time in English football.
“Not at all!” he told F1 Racing magazine. “It was a disaster.
“There was a lot of talk and people writing things that were wrong.
“We took QPR from the bottom of the championship. There was a four-year plan and we took them into the Premier League. I don’t understand the fuss. We did it with not much money.
“After Bernie and I went away leaving Mr Lakshmi Mittal and Mr Tony Fernandes to run the show and spend a lot of money, it’s funny to see they still have six or seven players who were with us in the championship.
“I believe we did it quite well but, I tell you, it was no fun at all.
“You need to treat football like a full-time job and not like an investor.
“There were too many people; the manager, the assistant manager and, awlways, you were dealing with the agents. In the end, we sold it.”
During Briatore’s first two-and-a-half years at Loftus Road, Rangers had six full-time managers and four caretakers.
After stepping down as chairman, the R’s brought in Neil Warnock as manager and he guided them to the Premier League.
But the Italian does not regret hiring and firing those managers.
“If you don’t fire these coaches, you never go up,” he explained. “When you understand someone is not good enough to do the job, it’s better you fire them immediately rather than waste another six months.
“I felt we were going nowhere with these guys. In the end, we made it. The most important thing in sport is the result.”

SOUTH KOREA...

Park Ji-sung and Korean teammate Yun Suk-young will join their English Premier League club Queens Park Rangers on a Korean tour from July 16 to 25. On July 19, QPR will play local side Gyeongnam FC in a friendly match.

The Korean club held a press conference in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province on Monday, and said, "We agreed to hold a friendly with QPR on condition that Park and Yun will definitely play."

While the venue has yet to be confirmed, the most likely option is Gyeongnam's home stadium, Changwon Football Center. QPR will also likely hold a friendly with a foreign team here during the tour.

Korean fans' attention remains pinned on what lies in store for Park as the Rangers, with just four games left this season, are sitting 19th out of 20 teams in the league with a paltry 24 points from four wins, 12 draws and 18 losses. As relegation to the second-tier Championship now seems inevitable, players that command higher salaries may find themselves at greater risk of being traded to other teams.

"Even if Park gets traded to another team before the friendly, it has been agreed that he will not move on before the match is held," Gyeongnam owner Ahn Jong-bok said on Monday, hinting that the game could be Park's last for QPR.

QPR supporter accused of stabbing Everton fan after a match remanded in custody

A QUEENS Park Rangers supporter accused of stabbing an Everton fan after a match was remanded in custody.

Leon Hughes, 24, appeared before magistrates at North Liverpool Community Justice Centre today.

Hughes, of Eastleigh Walk, London, is accused of attacking Nikolas Lintott with a small saw known as a pad saw as fans left the area around Goodison Park after the Blues' 2-0 win over relegation-threatened QPR on April 13.

Pad saws are used in DIY to cut metal and wood when working in small areas.

Julian Peers, prosecuting, said Mr Lintott had been stabbed in the chest with the saw, which had a serrated blade.
The court was told the Everton fan suffered a punctured lung in the attack on Priory Road, at the junction with Walton Lane.

He had attempted to break up an incident involving a female supporter after attending the match himself.

After the incident he was discharged from hospital and was reported to be resting at home.

Hughes, a warehouseman, faces charges of malicious wounding with intent to cause GBH and possession of an offensive weapon.

He was denied bail and is set to appear at Liverpool crown court on May 3.
