QPR Official Site - BUZ RULED OUT
- Akos Buzsaky has been ruled out of tonight's trip to West Bromwich Albion owing to a medial ligament injury.
- The R's midfielder sustained the injury to his left knee during training on Friday and has not travelled to The Hawthorns with the rest of the playing squad.
- Head Physio Paul Hunter told www.qpr.co.uk: "Unfortunately Akos suffered a slight medial ligament strain during shooting practice on Friday.
- "It is not a serious injury, but he's not in a position to travel for tonight's game.
- "We will see how he is over the next couple of days before making a decision regarding his potential inclusion against Sheffield United." QPR
Evening Standard/Tom Collomosse - Marc Bircham: We must put our turmoil behind us-
- Marc Bircham has told Queens Park Rangers' players they must forget one of the most turbulent weeks in the club's recent history if they are to have a chance of competing in the Premier League next season.
- Bircham and Steve Gallen have been promoted from their coaching roles with the youth team for tonight's match at second-placed West Bromwich Albion, following the suspension of manager Jim Magilton last week.
- Magilton was punished for an alleged head-butt on midfielder Akos Buzsaky in the dressing room after last Monday's 3-1 defeat at Watford, and with the Northern Irishman's future still unresolved, Rangers are unable to appoint a permanent replacement.
- Yet despite their off-field problems and a run of just one win in seven matches, Rangers can move to within a point of the Championship play-off places if they can secure a surprise win at The Hawthorns.
- At 31, Bircham is the youngest manager in the Football League, and made his last appearance as a player for Rangers on 6 May, 2007.
- "It's been a whirlwind," said lifelong fan Bircham, who was Christmas shopping with his family last Wednesday when he received a call from the club's sporting director and former chairman Gianni Paladini. "On the Monday evening, we'd been in charge of the FA Youth Cup win over Southampton.
- "Then the phone rang, and Steve and I were asked to take the team for the West Brom game.
- "The game is on television, so it's a chance for the players to show the country that we're as good as we were last time we played live, when we beat Reading 4-1 in October.
- "That was the first time QPR had been in the headlines for footballing reasons since we were promoted to the Championship in 2004.
- "What's happened in the last week means people have already written us off, but promotion is still there for the taking. We have to bring back the feeling from the Reading game, and bring a team spirit together. It's almost like it's us against the world.
- "We've won only one in seven, but these are the same players who scored 12 goals in three League games a couple of months ago. The squad we have is as good as any in the League, and if we have players fit and on form, we can win any game."
- Bircham and Gallen are not under any illusions about being handed the job on a permanent basis.
- Magilton is not expected to take charge of another first-team game, with Darren Ferguson and Paul Hart understood to be strong contenders for the position.
- But Bircham and Gallen are understood to have held a meeting with co-owner Flavio Briatore last week, and the pair left the talks confident they would have the final word on team selection for tonight's match.
- Bircham and Gallen have known each other for years, with Bircham having played with Steve's younger brother, Kevin, at Loftus Road between 2003 and 2007, and Bircham believes this factor will work in their favour.
- "We've been working well together with the youth team," said Bircham. "It's not as though we have just been thrown together, we know how the other works. We know we've only got the job on a temporary basis. But just as every kid wants to make it as a player, so every coach wants to be in charge of the first team one day." Standard
