WATFORD OBSERVER/Frank Smith - QPR striker Heidar Helguson uncertain about Watford future
- Watford manager Malky Mackay insists Heidar Helguson's short-term future is "not definite one way or the other" but the striker is bracing himself for his second stint with the Hornets to come to a close at the end of the year.
- The striker's loan spell is scheduled to finish following the game with Bristol City on December 28 and it seems increasingly unlikely the 32-year-old will remain at Vicarage Road in 2010.
- "I haven't heard anything," Helguson admitted to the Watford Observer on Tuesday.
- "I am not even sure whether QPR would allow me to stay. As we are speaking now I am going back unless something changes.
- "I don't know anything. The situation now is that I am going back. If something comes up then we will review at that point.
- "I would like to stay but whether that would happen or whether there is a possibility of that happening, we will just see because with the financial situation, whether they can afford any extras.
- "There are four of us. One [Tom Cleverley] has signed until the end of the season and there are three left. We just have to wait and see what happens."
- This week's worrying statement from Watford's parent company has increased fans' fears that the club will be unable to afford the striker, who has scored five goals in five appearances, even if an agreement with Rangers is reached.
- Helguson's parent club are paying almost half of his wages but the former Fulham man's cut-price salary at Watford is still outside their new wage structure.
- On Friday of last week chairman Jimmy Russo had to put another £1m into the club and Helguson admits the financial position is "probably worse than a lot of people expected".
- He said: "I saw on the internet that Jimmy had to put money in. If he is having to plough in money just to keep us going for the next month then the situation must be bad.
- "So I am assuming that any money for players is right at the bottom of the priority list, that is just the way it is."
- There is a chance Helguson could remain at Watford beyond December though, according to Hornets boss Mackay.
- He said: "We will be discussing trying to keep him and talking to the club but everything comes into it and the finances come into it. The way the club is being run, we need to make sure we do what is best for the football club.
- "But he has been immaculate since he has been here, a fantastic pro and we will be talking with QPR in terms of him.
- "It is a situation where it is going to take its course but there is certainly no definite one way or the other.
- "QPR are involved as well as he is their player and they have first call on what he does next."
- Should Helguson return to QPR at the end of December then Mackay said the club would look to bring in a direct replacement.
- "We are thin on the ground and we recognise that," Mackay acknowledged.
- "Heidar has had a big impact and has been a big help to Danny Graham, who at times has had to plough a lone furrow up there.
- "We will keep looking at it and whatever it is, we will make the best decision for Watford."
- Helguson had appeared in all but one of QPR's league games prior to his return to Watford and the striker expects to be involved with the first team should he go back to Loftus Road in January.
- He said: "I have spoken to [assistant manager] John Gorman. I didn't leave on bad terms at all so I would expect to train with the first team and be involved because there isn't any animosity, there isn't. So if or when I go back it should be like normal." Watford Observer
