Mark Douglas/The Journal - Wayne Routledge hoping to rejuvenate Newcastle United career
-
REVITALISED winger Wayne Routledge has not given up hope of resurrecting his Newcastle United career.
Routledge has been a revelation since joining QPR on loan at the turn of the year, scoring four times in 13 games to help the Loftus Road outfit to the brink of promotion.
Rangers are desperate to clinch a permanent £1.5million deal at the end of the season, but Neil Warnock’s assertion that a fee has already been agreed between the Championship leaders and Newcastle has been knocked back by Routledge’s agent, Will Salthouse.
Instead, his advisor has revealed the 26-year-old would love to return to St James’ Park for a second crack at making his Magpies move a success.
“Wayne’s going to come back to Newcastle United in the summer. There’s no deal in place between QPR and Newcastle,” he told The Journal.
“There’s an option of a permanent move as part of the deal but nothing has been agreed at the moment and he’s looking forward to returning.
“He’d like to come back to Newcastle United and show what he can do, to be honest, but obviously if Newcastle don’t want him then it is difficult for him.
“But at this moment in time he’s looking forward to coming back and trying to fight for his place at Newcastle.
“He’s enjoyed his time so far and has two years left on his contract, so he’s certainly not looking to move on unless Newcastle want him to.”
Routledge’s desire to return is one thing but much will rest on how Alan Pardew’s summer recruitment drive progresses.
The United boss has the £35million Andy Carroll kitty to spend and had suggested he was ready to let the former England under-21 man leave after concluding he would not command regular starts
But Routledge’s upturn in form since returning to the Championship has been noted at St James’ Park and there could yet be an opportunity for a player with two years left on his contract.
Since the winger’s departure, injury-hit Newcastle have been left searching for stop-gap solutions all over the pitch – including shifting Danny Simpson into Routledge’s right wing slot for one game. The major issue is whether the player is capable of translating his second tier form into a consistent run in the Premier League if United decide to offer him a second chance.
But the player himself would argue he did not get a sustained run in the team, with Joey Barton’s shift to the right at the start of autumn depriving him of starts. His last appearance for United was the 3-1 reverse at Stevenage.
Meanwhile, Pardew has knocked back suggestions that star left-back Jose Enrique has already agreed a move to Liverpool.
Former Reds assistant boss Phil Thompson told Norwegian TV over the weekend that a summer switch to Anfield was a formality, a suggestion that has not gone down well at St James’ Park.
The Journal understands that despite firm interest from Kenny Dalglish, Thompson was jumping the gun. AC Milan and Bayern Munich are also interested while Newcastle – who know the player holds all the aces – have not given up hope of keeping him at Newcastle.
Pardew said: “There’s definitely no deal between the clubs – 100%.
“He’s under contract here until next summer. And we hope to open talks on a new deal as soon as possible. That’s where we are.” Whether that is enough to quell the speculation is unclear. The Newcastle defender has not spoken publicly since an interview in February in which he welcomed interested from Liverpool, Manchester United and Aston Villa and said he “aspired to more” than life at St James’ Park.
He subsequently said his words had been taken out of context and spoke of his “disappointment” about being portrayed as unsettled. The Journal

Agent insists on-loan winger is heading back to Newcastle
- Wayne Routledge's agent claims that Queens Park Rangers have not agreed a deal with Newcastle for the winger, who is set to return to Tyneside in the summer.

- QPR boss Neil Warnock has made it clear he wants to keep the winger and insinuated a deal was already done.
- But the player's agent Will Salthouse says the 26-year-old is heading back to Newcastle at the end of the season.

DAILY MAIL/Sami Mikbel -QPR boss Neil Warnock eyeing Fulham striker Andy Johnson and Hull's Jimmy Bullard
Queens Park Rangers manager Neil Warnock is already planning for his side's top-flight return by plotting moves for Andy Johnson and Jimmy Bullard.
The Loftus Road club could secure promotion to the Barclays Premier League with victory over Derby on Monday night.
And Warnock is already identifying players he feels will give his side top league experience needed season.
Fulham striker Johnson is high on the west London club's hitlist.

Johnson has scored two goals in 23 games for Mark Hughes' side this season since returning from a long-term knee injury.
The former Everton striker has a year left on his current deal and Warnock hopes to lure the 30-year-old to Loftus Road.
However, Johnson does not want to take a drop in his £40,000-per-week wages which could prove to be a stumbling block.
Hull midfielder Bullard - who is on loan at Ipswich - is set to leave the KC Stadium at the end of the season.

And Warnock has earmarked the former Fulham man for a place in his midfield next season.
Ipswich are keen on making Bullard's loan deal permanent - but another crack at the top-flight would be hard to resist for the 32-year-old.
Bullard's £45,000-per-week contract still has two years left to run. Daily Mail
