- QUEENS PARK RANGERS 6, CHELSEA 0- Easter Monday, March 31 1986 - Canon League Division One

- A glorious Easter Monday as Rangers smashed home six goals to kill off Chelsea's League title hopes.
- The R's went into this match in 14th place in the table. Chelsea were fourth and needed the points to rekindle their faltering challenge for the championship - especially after a 4-0 defeat against West Ham at Stamford Bridge on the Saturday.
- It was a windy morning with intermittent rain showers peppering our Omniturf pitch, which had been much-criticised by Chelsea chairman Ken Bates earlier in the season.
- For the first time in the history of this fixture, advance ticketing arrangements meant that there were no Chelsea fans infiltrating the Loft terrace. Cash admission was not permitted on the day so Rangers enjoyed terrific support from the all-ticket home end.
- It took the Super Hoops only eight minutes to open the scoring. John Byrne's initial shot was charged down but Gary Bannister followed up to drill into the bottom right hand corner from an acute angle at the School End.
-Cries of "Bann-is-ter...Bann-is-ter...Bann-is-ter..." (to the American marching tune) and "You're Not Singing Anymore..." rang out from the Loft terrace as the 4,000 Chelsea fans at the other end looked on in stunned silence.
- Rangers doubled their advantage on 25 minutes. Byrne was involved again with a right wing cross, Terry Fenwick nodded the ball on and Bannister arrived in the six yard box to head home. A very noisy rendition of "Singing The Blues..." followed from the Loft.
- A minute before the break, John Byrne picked up possession just inside the Chelsea half and lost his marker with a deft drop of the shoulder. He then dribbled past another four startled defenders amidst an orgy of skill before lashing into the net from just inside the box.
- It was the most spectacular R's goal of the season and our fans rejoiced with versions of "John-ny Byrne, John-ny Byrne, John-ny Byrne" (against using the marching tune) and "Easy...Easy.."
- The fourth came on 58 when Bannister tore away from the shambolic Chelsea back line and sent a low bullet-like shot into the right hand corner. Even the QPR stewards on the side of the pitch at the Loft End jumped up and down to celebrate. Meanwhile, the electronic scoreboard declared: "GARY HAT-TRICK BANNISTER"
- Then on 64 minutes, Bannister whipped in a low cross from the right and Byrne provided a crisp finish for goal number five with the Chelsea rearguard in shreds. The Loft boys bounced around in unison with chants of "Blame The Pitch, Blame The Pitch, Blame The Pitch..." directed at the ashen-faced Ken Bates in the main stand.
- Chelsea had striker David Speedie sent off two minutes later for flattening Ian Dawes with his elbow. The Rangers fans waved theatrically while singing "Bye Bye Speedie, Bye Bye Speedie..." (to the tune of Auld Lang Syne) as he plodded dejectedly from the arena.
- The sixth blue and white hooped goal in Chelsea's net came in the 82nd minute. Substitute Leroy Rosenior ran from the halfway line through a wide open defence before firing firmly past despairing goalkeeper Steve Francis. The jubilant Loft bellowed "We Want Seven...We Want Seven..." as the visiting fans headed for the exits.
- Chelsea manager John Hollins said afterwards: "It's been a very bad Easter for us, but I want to give QPR full credit for their performance."

John Byrne Remembers - QPR Official Site, March 20 2008

- "Probably the best game was when we beat Chelsea 6-0 at Loftus Road on Easter Monday 1986," recalls Byrne.
- "I'll never forget that day! It was just one of those occasions when everything went right for us. Banna was on fire - he scored a hat-trick and I got a couple too.
- "I remember one of my goals where I picked up possession on the halfway line. It was funny on that plastic pitch, because bodies would fall all around you if you got into your stride. So eventually I wriggled free and slotted a shot into the bottom corner.
- "There were some big name players in the Chelsea line-up, including centre-back Doug Rougvie who seemed like he wanted to kill somebody when the score was 5-0! He was certainly looking for blood!
- "We had the Milk Cup Final coming up and I remember saying to Banna with about 15 minutes to go 'I ain't going anywhere near Rougvie'. And Gary replied 'Neither am I!' So we both ended up playing on the wings with no one in the middle!... QPR

Ben Kosky/Kilburn Times! - The day when QPR had six appeal

- QPR fans are basking in the feel-good factor right now – but it can’t come close to the euphoric mood that engulfed Loftus Road almost exactly 25 years ago.

As they savour the prospect of facing Chelsea on equal terms again next season, Rangers fans of a certain age will fondly recall probably their most memorable derby day triumph of all time, on Easter Monday - March 31, 1986.

There could be little doubt as to who ruled the roost in west London at that time after Rangers – who had won at Stamford Bridge two months earlier to knock Chelsea out of the League Cup – subjected their neighbours to a 6-0 thrashing.

Gary Bannister wrote his name into QPR folklore with a hat-trick – a feat he would repeat against Chelsea 18 months later – while strike partner John Byrne scored twice and Chelsea’s David Speedie was sent off before substitute Leroy Rosenior banged in number six.

And Rangers centre-back Steve Wicks, who had previously played for Chelsea and would later return to the Blues for a second spell, realised exactly what the scale of victory meant to the home crowd.

Wicks, who now helps out on matchdays at Loftus Road in a corporate hospitality role, told the Times: “I think we were always perceived as the smaller club, and that day felt like we’d taught big brother a lesson.

“I used to mix with some of the Chelsea players when I was at QPR and some of them were full of themselves, they thought they were better than they were.

“But QPR always used to beat them and, when we had our best side of that period under Terry Venables, with players like Simon Stainrod, Clive Allen and John Gregory, they weren’t even in our division.

“We were the established First Division side and Chelsea were the new kids on the block, but they still felt they were the bigger club. That day, though, we just played brilliantly from the first whistle.

“Everything we tried came off and I felt that, the way we were playing, it could be a real rout. I remember looking at the clock when the fifth goal went in and realising we’d still got well over 20 minutes to go.

“It was a great day for all QPR fans. In all the years I played for QPR, that game and the 5-5 draw with Newcastle are the two I’ll always remember.

“Chelsea were actually going quite well at that time – David Speedie and Kerry Dixon were scoring regularly, but our team was based on a strong defensive unit and we felt if we kept them quiet we could take the game by the scruff of the neck.

“Teams would come to Loftus Road, panic a bit and hit long balls and, when you’ve got two guys who are six foot plus at the back – myself and Alan McDonald – that was just playing into our hands.”

At the time, few teams enjoyed visiting Loftus Road – not only because of the goal threat posed by Bannister and Byrne, but also the artificial surface, with its unpredictable bounce, that had been installed in 1981.

Chelsea chairman Ken Bates was an outspoken critic of the Omniturf pitch but, as Wicks reveals, it became something of a psychological mountain for Blues players after their humbling in 1986.

“We’d absolutely dominated the game when we played Chelsea in the cup quarter-final that year, but they got a late equaliser, so we had to go to Stamford Bridge for a replay,” Wicks recalled.

“You wondered if we might have missed our chance. Also, Ken Bates had written that article in the programme, saying ‘now we’ve got them on grass, we’ll show them how to play’.

“When Michael Robinson scored to put us through, it was the most wonderful feeling. What made it special for me was that I was captain for the replay, because Terry Fenwick was called away on England duty.

“But the 6-0 became almost a mental thing for Chelsea. When I was playing for them a year or two later at Loftus Road, there were still a lot of players who’d been involved in that game and they went onto the plastic pitch with trepidation.

“Pat Nevin, for instance, was one of the most skilful players I played with and it should have been a dream surface for him, but it didn’t work out that way and Gary Bannister scored another hat-trick.

“Gary was a very good finisher on that plastic pitch – he knew just how the ball would run, he anticipated the bounce so well and made Chelsea pay again.”

While Rangers fans can at least await the prospect of regaining a genuine derby fixture for the first time since their Division Two tussles with Brentford, Wicks acknowledges that the club have some distance to go before they can dream of lording it over Chelsea once more.

“It’s important that the people in charge of the club understand that, if you’re going into the Premier League, there’s got to be substantial investment,” added the 54-year-old.

“Don’t get me wrong, the lads in the squad have done a brilliant job this season – people like Paddy Kenny and Shaun Derry have been outstanding – and they should keep a lot of them, but they will need more Premier League quality.

“Playing Chelsea again will be fantastic. I love hearing the crowd singing ‘come on you Rs’ when the ground’s full – it’s a special atmosphere and very different to what Chelsea will be used to.

“I hope West Ham stay up because games against them were always good occasions too. With Arsenal, Spurs and Fulham as well, there are so many things for QPR fans to look forward to.”

Paul Warburton/Gazette - Cook makes QPR vow

- LEE Cook believes that if QPR get promoted to the Premiership – they will be a match for anyone in the second half of the table.
- The winger is hoping to return to the Championship leaders before the end of the season after recovering from injury, and reckons anything Wolves can do – his beloved Hoops can do just as well.
- He said: "You look at Wolves and I think our squad is as good as theirs – and they’ve beaten Man U and Chelsea this season.
- "The top seven are a level above – but the rest from 11 to bottom are all the same.
- "It’s not going to be easy, but I’m confident we won’t drop out at the first go. We’ve got the quality and got the workers – and it’s a great mix."
- Lifelong fan Cook even gave back a £250,000 signing-on fee to Rs when he signed for Fulham in 2007, and revealed the in-joke when keeper Lee Camp was at the club was that Cook ‘owned’ him.
- He explained: "I used to give Lee gip when I returned to Rangers from Fulham.
- "Because we bought him for £250,000 – I used to tell him I owned him. It was a lot of money – and I wouldn’t have done it for anyone, but at the time we were struggling financially. Then six weeks later they supposedly became the richest club in the country.
- "But I believe in karma, so what you give out – you get back." Gazette

QPR Official Site - IN RESERVE: R'S DRAW WITH FULHAM

Lee Cook came through 70 minutes of action as the Reserves drew 0-0 with Fulham at Harlington this afternoon.

The R's midfielder, who has been limited to just one First Team appearance this season owing to extra rehab work needed on a knee problem, looked lively throughout in a game largely dominated by the hosts.

Ronnie Jepson named a strong starting line-up, which also included Matt Connolly, Dan Shittu, Martin Rowlands, Akos Buzsaky and Rob Hulse, and his men enjoyed the majority of possession.

Hulse almost gave the R's the lead as early as the sixth minute but his downward header from close range went just wide, while Cook forced Fulham stopper Jesse Joronen into a fine stop with a powerful drive from 25 yards.

Just before the break, Fulham's Alexander Brister saw his shot from the edge of the area brilliantly saved by Radek Cerny at the near post.

Emerging youth product Michael Doughty was introduced at half-time and immediately made an impact, getting on the end of a fine reverse pass by Petter Vaagan Moen, but his shot from inside the area was smothered.

Doughty was again in the thick of the action on the hour mark after a trialist - playing at right back for the R's - pulled the ball back from the byline, but the midfielder's effort from 12 yards was deflected wide.

On 68 minutes, Shittu almost grabbed the winner for QPR with a glancing header from Cook's free-kick on the right, but the Rangers' centre-back's clever flick came back off the upright.

Fulham had a good chance late on following a quick counter-attack, but Cristian Marquez-Sanchez blazed over from 12 yards.

QPR Reserves: Cerny, Trialist (Parker, 80), Borrowdale, Rowlands (Doughty, 46), Connolly, Shittu, Cook (Tofas, 70), Hewitt, Hulse (German, 65), Buzsaky, Vaagan Moen.

SKY/Chris Galea - Miller relaxed over future - Hoops hitman happy to stay or go
28th March 2011

On-loan QPR striker Ishmael Miller insists he is not worried about where he will be plying his trade next season.

The 24-year-old has seen his career hampered by injury in recent campaigns, but scored his first goal in almost a year for Neil Warnock's side against Leicester earlier this month.

With Rangers closing on promotion to the Premier League this term, while parent club West Brom battle to beat the top-flight drop, Miller says he is happy to remain at Loftus Road or return to the Baggies.
Confidence

He told skysports.com: "I've had a lot of injuries, which have stalled my career back at West Brom a little and I just needed something to inject a bit of confidence back in my game.

"It was nice to get the phone call from Neil Warnock and he is a great guy at a great club, so I couldn't really say no to be fair.

"West Brom have got a great squad there, with a new manager in place since I left, but I was happy there and I am happy here, so I'm not sure what will happen this summer.

"They could change divisions this summer, but hopefully West Brom can stay up and be joined by QPR next season.

"I'm not really thinking about my long-term future now because I'm just happy to be playing games again.

"I'm not putting any pressure on either club to make a decision and I will be happy to be playing at either club next season."

Miller insists staying fit is his top priority as he looks to close the door on his injury struggles.

Injuries

He added: "I'm just hoping that I stay injury free and have a good end to the season here, with promotion at the end of it because I've had a bad couple of years.

"I'm over them now and hopefully I can play my football without picking up any major injuries because I've had enough of them recently.

"Obviously, there will be the odd niggle here and there, but as long as I stay away from the long-term injuries I'll be happy.

"It was difficult to get myself going and in the team back at West Brom because when you are injured for a long period of time you tend to fall off the radar, so this opportunity was great for me."

QPR midfielder set for reserves run-out
By Jacob Murtagh/Fulham Chronicle

LEE Cook will step up his recovery from injury with a run-out for the reserves against former club Fulham tomorrow.

The Rangers winger has made just one appearance for the first-team this season – the FA Cup defeat at Blackburn in January – after suffering knee and then back problems.

Sheffield Wednesday, Millwall and Brighton had been sniffing around the 28-year-old with view to a loan switch, but he failed to move on before last Thursday's deadline.

Instead, the former Watford star will line up against the Whites in a behind-closed-doors friendly against west London rivals Fulham at QPR's Harlington training ground.

Midfielder Martin Rowlands, who returned from a loan spell at Millwall last week, is also due to feature. Fulham Chronicle

- Finally admitting defeat by Father Time and hanging up boots – or gloves in a goalkeeper's case – can be difficult for any footballer. Few have found it as hard to cope with as John "Budgie" Burridge. It could be said that, hyperactive obsessive or not, he was far more fortunate than most in carrying on until the age of 46 as player-manager of Blyth Spartans while working part-time as a coach at Newcastle United and Leeds United. No matter: "I was on the bench with Kevin Keegan and his staff at a game against Arsenal one day, and I just started crying. Kevin asked what was the matter and I said, 'I just want to play'."
- Unsure what direction his life would take after becoming the oldest player to appear in the Premier League – at 43, a record that still stands – he had tried to cover every option simultaneously with coaching, management and a sportswear business. Physical and mental exhaustion was the outcome, compounded by embarrassing headlines after a court case for unwittingly selling counterfeit goods. Fined £16,000, he left the court "feeling sick and depressed" and shortly afterwards contemplated drastic action. "I locked myself in my room and was thinking about ways to kill meself – hang meself, take pills..."
- If that sounds extreme, it seemed a logical response; for those who live for football, as Burridge claims to do a dozen years later, what happens without it? He spent several days shut away, refusing to eat, until professional help was summoned when his long-suffering wife Janet phoned Keegan. "It's always said it's men in white coats who come for you, but it's not," Burridge recalls. "They wear green boiler suits and stick a needle in your arse. When I woke up, I was in The Priory."
- He stayed for five months, hearing tales from the real world and contrasting them with his own worries. "On the first floor were the depressives, the second floor the alcoholics and the third floor the 13 or 14-year-old girl drug addicts. In group therapy a woman would say she'd lost her husband and three kids in a car crash. And I'd have to stand up and say I was suicidal because I was 47 and couldn't play Premier League football any more.
- "It made me think a bit and it did me good just to be away from everything, like being in a bomb shelter. But when I came out I thought, 'I can't go to another Premier League game, I'll start crying again'. I had to get away to another country."
- Having earned coaching badges on Scottish Football Association courses while playing for Hibernian, he was able to find a job as goalkeeping coach with one of his many former managers, Ian Porterfield, in Oman. That was in the late Nineties and he has been in the Gulf ever since, in and out of jobs as is the way with football folk, but loving the lifestyle. He survived a potentially fatal accident when knocked off his bicycle by a car travelling in the opposite direction, requiring 147 stitches and "umpteen operations and skin grafts" while becoming hooked on Prozac, yet recovered sufficiently to become a local TV personality as a football pundit.
- He is proud to have discovered the first player from the area to make a career in the Premier League in Ali Al-Habsi, the keeper currently on loan from Bolton to Wigan.
- All this is recounted in a hugely entertaining autobiography which covers 30 clubs, almost 800 games and so many managers it is impossible to keep count. Ask for his favourite among them, or happiest time, and the two coincide: "Terry Venables by a million miles and playing for him at Crystal Palace in a great young team with kids like Kenny Sansom. Terry taught me more in six months than other managers in six years."
- In the far-sighted Venables, he found a kindred spirit. If his regular somersaults and handstands were playing to the crowd, he can claim to have been ahead of his time in terms of diet, warming up on the pitch (which most grumpy groundsmen tried to stop), using gloves even on dry days and visiting a sports psychologist: "I used to get the piss taken out of me right, left and centre but now everyone's doing those things."
- Beating Bobby Robson's Ipswich 4-1 at Selhurst Park, Palace sat briefly on top of the old First Division, which Burridge celebrated by sitting on top of the crossbar – while play was going on. Yet the supposed "team of the Eighties" lasted only one season into that decade before falling apart. Venables soon left for Queens Park Rangers, where Burridge would later join him, having had a not untypical row about wages. "I was selfish about money," he happily admits, while denying that it stemmed from a "horrendous" upbringing in Workington, Cumbria. "It wasn't insecurity, it was pride. If I'd had a good season and got a club like Wolves or Palace or QPR promoted, which I did, making them millions, I'd be first into the manager's office to ask for top wages or I was off." Sometimes the ploy would work, sometimes not, and he would be away on his travels once more.
- His least favourite manager was no contest either; largely, it has to be said, through his own doing. In an era when goalkeepers received less protection than today, Burridge would employ specially sharpened studs to stand on the foot of anyone who came too close. Ossie Ardiles became an infuriated victim at Southampton, receiving a mouthful about the Falklands War at the same time, and never forgave him. Introduced as the new manager of Newcastle in 1991, he ignored Burridge's outstretched hand and simply told the club secretary to pay up his contract. On the road again.
- The brief Blyth Spartans experience suggested he would have made an interesting manager, yet his reputation counted against him. "Chairmen thought I was a jackass, because I turned football into entertainment. I was regarded as a nutcase, but I was a totally dedicated pro, first in for training and last out. You don't play until 46 if you're not dedicated."
- Since the Oman FA sacked their manager Claude Le Roy in January, Burridge, now 59, has spent more time than usual at one of his three houses in Muscat, looking at the Indian Ocean from a hammock. It is impossible to imagine him lying there for very long.
- 'Budgie: - The Autobiography of John Burridge' (£16.99) is published by John Blake on 4th April - Independent

Independent - Neil Warnock: Brazilian team's visit to QPR took me back to the night I saw Pele embarrass Wednesday - What I learnt This WeekSaturday, 26 March 2011

I was able to rekindle a vivid childhood memory on Thursday when the great Brazil trained at Loftus Road. We are so lucky having a ground in the centre of London, first Barcelona came here, now Brazil, who were preparing for tomorrow's match against Scotland at the Emirates.

They have got to be the most enjoyable footballers I've seen in my lifetime. I'll never forget the first time I saw them in the flesh. It was 1962, I was 13, and Pele's Santos played a friendly at Hillsborough. Even watching Santos provided a whole new meaning to football, the way they passed it around. The only English team I've ever seen play in a similar way are Arsène Wenger's Arsenal.

Everything seemed to stop and everyone in the crowd gasped whenever Pele touched the ball. Santos won 4-2 and Pele scored from a penalty, which I remember clearly because he just walked up to it, dummied, watched the goalkeeper dive one way, then rolled it into the other side of the net. No one had seen that done before – you have to remember this was nearly 50 years ago. The funny thing was Sheffield Wednesday got a penalty soon after and their captain, Colin Dobson, tried to do the same. The Santos keeper didn't buy the dummy and just picked up Dobson's shot.

Pele really was a true great and it must help the Brazilian kids at a young age, playing barefoot on the beach and in the favela shanty towns, it has to develop their technique.

They had a proper workout on Thursday which I enjoyed watching, and they were great afterwards signing shirts and, as you can see, happy to have their photographs taken. I had a good chat with their manager, Mano Menezes, and told Neymar there were other teams in London if he didn't fancy Chelsea (you may recall he turned down a move to Stamford Bridge in August), and life wasn't all about money. He had fantastic skill, he reminded me of Adel Taarabt. I also had a chat with David Luiz, who of course did join Chelsea. He was brilliant with William and his friend Louis. All in all I've never met such a polite group of players.

I told them it will be a great atmosphere because the Scots are sure to turn out in force. It'll bring back memories for me of when England used to play Scotland at Wembley. London seemed to be Scottish for two days. It was amazing and, although there was some trouble in the later years, most games it was fine. I just hope everyone approaches tomorrow in great spirit and enjoys it.

Obviously, Jamie Mackie is gutted to miss out on the match being injured but the Scotland manager, Craig Levein, has invited him to be part of it, which is a lovely gesture.

2. Even without Bale, today will be tough for England

All eyes today will be on Cardiff for what promises to be a lot closer match than most people would predict, despite the absence of Wales' Gareth Bale. I bet Glen Johnson was relieved about that but it is such a pity for Gary Speed, who would have loved to have his full team of players available. Nevertheless, you can't write off any team that has Craig Bellamy in it and I'm sure the racket in Cardiff will make for a very uncomfortable afternoon for England.

With all the talk this week surrounding John Terry's reinstatement as captain, I expect he'll be pleased to get back on the pitch and do what he does best. I was not surprised all the players backed him. Let's be honest, who would say anything and jeopardise their own position?

3. Tragedy in player's family puts game into perspective

I was in central London on Sunday night with Adel Taarabt, who was picking up an award for being the Football League's Player of the Year. It was well-deserved despite some strong competition because there's some quality players in the Championship. Grant Holt, at Norwich, and Swansea's Scott Sinclair were also shortlisted and Reading's Shane Long and Danny Graham at Watford must have been in contention as well, not forgetting Jay Bothroyd, who was picked for England earlier in the season. It shows the ability of players around the Championship.

Adel's the youngest of that six and it is easy to forget he is only 21. He's played 37 games this season and he said to me: "I've never played this many games in my life, gaffer." Last Saturday, at Doncaster, would have been his 38th. Despite having a virus all week he said at half-nine in the morning he was going to play. Then at 10 he got a phone call saying his cousin had been shot dead in Marseilles. As he was telling me I could see he was distraught and I sent him straight back to London. He would not have been in any state to play but that wasn't the point. Family is always more important than football. I told him that, and told him to get off home. Hogan Ephraim replaced him, and who scored the winner? It's strange how football sometimes works out like that.

Adel's in Morocco now. He was going anyway to play for Morocco against Algeria, which is like England v Scotland apparently, but more lively, so I told him to spend a few days with his family.

4. Strauss's side can deliver with backs to the wall

Everyone else will write our cricket team off in today's World Cup quarter-final against Sri Lanka but I'm confident. It's when our sportsmen are written off we are at our most dangerous. The flip side is that, as the England rugby team showed last week, we are at our most vulnerable when being praised.

5. Wii leads the Warnock household a merry dance

I went to watch Amy horse-riding on Tuesday. I used to dread the thought of my kids riding after a young lady in our village in Cornwall fell from her horse and suffered a bad injury. But Amy was so happy doing it with some of her friends. As she said, she has just as much chance of having an accident anywhere else in her life. You have to let them do things like that, otherwise you may as well wrap them in cotton wool. No doubt when we eventually move to Cornwall we'll get her a pony, but it's not fair to have one now when we don't live down there.

The other popular activity in our house is Wii dancing. When Natalie came to babysit William and Amy on Sunday they couldn't wait for us to go out so they could all get on it. People talk about computer games being bad for kids but this one must be healthy with all that exercise. Sharon had to sit down after half an hour, she was exhausted, but the kids somehow just kept going. And me? I was huddled on the sofa under two blankets because they were so hot they insisted on having the back door wide open.

6. The only unwanted points I've picked up this season

I was the only Championship manager to pick up three points in midweek, only it was no cause for celebration. They were for speeding.

On my way back from Cornwall on Thursday I was dictating this column on hands-free and forgot about watching the speedometer. You know what happened next. I was pulled up on the M5 by an unmarked police car and ended up with three points on my previously clean licence, and a £60 fine. It was ironic, given I had a couple of signed shirts and a ball in the back of the car for a police charity event.

Policemen always seem to be quite pleased when they are doing you. They seem to get the same thrill as I do when we score a goal. He recognised me, but said he hadn't got a clue about football so it wasn't personal. Typically, a car flew past a few miles later doing about 150mph and there was no sign of the police then.

Croydon Guardian
Fulham host a day to remember

Friday 25th March 2011

Fulham Football Club Foundation hosted the first national Premier League Down’s Syndrome Football Festival on Sunday, in association with the Down’s Syndrome Association (DSA) and Football Aid.

The day saw nine teams, from as far out as Ipswich, Cardiff and Hull travel to Fulham’s Motspur Park Training Ground to partake in a day of activities and tournaments aimed at raising the awareness of today’s World Down’s Syndrome Day (Monday 21st March) and the start of the National Down’s Syndrome Awareness Week.

Eighty-four players donning their respective team’s kit took to the pitch in front of 403 spectators. The nine teams involved were: Fulham Badgers QPR Tiger Cubs Charlton Upbeats West Ham DS Hammers Ipswich Town FC Trust DS Team Cardiff City Blue Birds Hull City DS Team Harvesters DSActive Hereford Bulls Those aged 12 years and under at the event engaged in some skill based football activities, capping their day off with a match. The 13+ group played a round robin, six-a-side tournament with each match lasting eight minutes.

The teams were split into 2 leagues on the day, with the Fulham Badgers facing tough opposition in their League One matches from rival London clubs the Charlton Upbeats, West Ham DS Hammers and the QPR Tiger Cubs.

The Charlton Upbeats rightfully lifted the League One trophy having won all of their matches. Cardiff City Blue Birds topped League Two, pipping Harvesters DSActive to the trophy by one point. Other runners up in that league were Hull City DS Team and the Ipswich Town FC Trust DS Team.

The festival was made possible thanks to a donation of £19,333 from the Premier League and Football Aid benefitting the Down’s Syndrome Association. DSA Patron and professional footballer Kevin Kilbane added his full support by taking part in the warm up and cheering from the touch line whilst the games were underway.

Former Fulham favourite, Simon Morgan, now Head of Community Development at the Premier League, was also around on the day to show the great support the Premier League has given the DSActive project since the pioneering Fulham Badgers team was formed in June 2006.

DSA Patron and Professional Footballer Kevin Kilbane summed up the day: “Numerous teams have joined since the launch of the Fulham Badgers in 2006 and now DSActive is benefitting people with Down’s syndrome through football. Today’s festival, I hope, is the first of many. The DSA has been great to my family amongst many families. It has been wonderful to come down and support the event.”

Premier League

Down's Syndrome Festival a great success

The first Premier League Down's Syndrome Football Festival has been held at Fulham's Motspur Park.

The event gave Down's Syndrome teams from across England the opportunity to show of their skills in the professional surroundings of Fulham's training ground on Sunday, writes Claire Harmer.

With the help of a donation of £19,333 from the Premier League and Football Aid, the Down's Syndrome Association (DSA) invited nine teams, 84 players and their families to enjoy a special day that marks the start of this year's annual Down's Syndrome awareness events, coming just a day before World Down's Syndrome Day on Monday 21st March.

Not only did the players have the chance to take part in what was for many their first competitive football tournament, the day also provided an ideal opportunity for disability coaches from all over the country to develop their skills and gain a better understanding of Down's Syndrome football.

After a warm-up, the players were split into two groups; older (13 plus) and younger (12 and under). The younger group engaged in football activities including Dribble Relay and Ring of Fire capping their day off with fun match. The older group played a round robin in six-a-side format with each match lasting eight minutes, with each team playing six matches.

After the festival, coaches attended a workshop to discuss the special considerations that are needed when working with Down's Syndrome players, how to set up a team and how to get the local community involved.

During the session, a new coaches resource produced by the Down's Syndrome Association, was unveiled which has been designed to address the bespoke needs of players with Down's Syndrome.

fantastic programme

Patricia James, the Down's Syndrome's Association's Corporate Manager and head of DSActive, the Down Syndrome Association's football programme, explained how the event came about, saying: "This is the first time we've done a national football festival.

"The Premier League Down's Syndrome festival has brought together nine teams, from London based-clubs, Cardiff City, Hereford and Hull. We held a festival last year for the London based teams, which Fulham kindly hosted and we've made it a national tournament this year.

"For most of these kids it's the first time they've engaged in a match setting, so they've been able to use the skills they've learned at training and apply them to a match. It's not really about winning or losing but it's about participation.

"DSActive is a fantastic programme bringing football to people with Down's Syndrome and days like this prove to everyone how well people with Down's Syndrome can engage with football. It's getting them to learn the fundamentals which this programme focuses on.

"Hopefully it will be the first of many events and now, with the credibility of being able to say the Premier League and Football Aid have put their quality stamp on it, we will be able to attract future funding for the Down's Syndrome Association. There is no doubt about it, this wouldn't have been possible without the support of the Premier League.

great success

Former Sunderland, Everton and Wigan Athletic star Kevin Kilbane, whose seven-year old daughter has Down's Syndrome, was there in his role as patron for the Down's Syndome Association and hailed the day a great success.

"It's been a great event. There are so many teams involved now, which has been the key to the event being the success it is. It's wonderful to see.

"I became involved with the Down's Syndrome Association seven years ago. My daughter has Down's Syndrome and I contacted them just for support at first, to try and see what the future had in store. Since then the DSA asked me to do a few events for them and to become a patron of the charity.

"It's great that we've got the Premier League and Football Aid on board, because without them events like this wouldn't be able to happen."

Down Syndrome Association DSActive

Simon Morgan, the Premier League's Head of Community Development hopes the day will be the first of many as the Premier League look to get young people with Down's Syndrome involved in regular football.

"As part of the Premier League's Creating Chances programme, we've been involved with the Down's Syndrome Association for a while. Fulham have a Down's Syndrome team and I was involved in setting that up when I worked at the club and it's grown so quickly.

"It's a perfect scheme for the Premier League to be involved with. Days like this make a really positive difference to people with Down's Syndrome.

"They need the opportunity to participate in football and lead a more active lifestyle. If also gives the children's parents the opportunity to come together and share their experiences. We've seen over the years through Fulham's involvement that it's been of a real benefit to the children with Down's Syndrome.

"The event has been a great experience for everyone involved. The Hull team were telling me how they came down on the team bus, stayed overnight in a hotel and they've been treated fantastically well and are here enjoying their football now. The event just proves the power football has to reach everyone in the community.

"This isn't a one off event from the Premier League. The objective is to get more clubs involved so that these children get the opportunity to play weekly football with a competitive element. It fits perfectly under our Creating Chances banner."

successful day

Fulham FC Foundation Chief Executive Steven Day explained how Fulham first got involved with the Down's Syndrome Association.

"We've been working with the Down's Syndrome Association for about five or six years now, and we pioneered the first Down's Syndrome team with them, the Fulham Badgers, and it's grown from strength to strength," he said. "We are working with the DSA to help more clubs have a Down's Syndrome team.

"It's been a very successful day. The kids seem to be really enjoying the games and we are really pleased to have been able to host it and have so many people enjoying the football.

"For us its an important part of the work that we do and it is just one element of all of the work we do across the Foundation. It's a great opportunity to bring people together using high quality facilities and it really does bring home the value of what all the Premier League clubs do in their community work. It's a lovely example of how we can make use of facilities that today wouldn't have been used otherwise and let the kids enjoy them."

With all the matches played, Charlton Upbeats pipped local rivals West Ham DS Hammers to the top of League 1, while Cardiff City Blue Birds came top in League 2.

Premier League’s Down’s Syndrome Football Festival

dsactive_1DSActive will host the Premier League's Down's Syndrome football festival on Sunday, 20th March, 2011. The festival, which coincides with World Down's Syndrome Day on the 21st of March and Down's Syndrome Awareness Week. The festival is being funded by the Premier League as part of its successful Creating Chances programme will be held at Fulham's training ground, Motspur Park. All DSActive teams are invited to take part in the festival. We anticipate that between eight and 12 teams will take part in the festival.

The festival will be separated primarily by age: five to 12 and 13 to 25. This will ensure that the safety of each individual player and indeed the group is maintained. The younger group will take part in several fun football based activities such as ‘beat the goalie'. The older group will take part in a series of matches. More details regarding this will be provided in due course.

A group warm up will take place once each team is registered and ready to play. Following a warm up and lunch, the festival and fun activities will begin. The various games will commence, as will the tournament which will run in seven a side format with rolling substitutes. The size of the pitch and goals will match the requirements of the chosen format. Each match will last eight minutes and will be played consecutively, provided that the same team does not play twice in a row (in which case a short rest period will be enforced). The teams, depending on numbers, will be separated into between two and four groups, playing in a round-robin style format.

Following the festival, a coach education session will be held in the classroom facility at the venue. The session will be open to existing DSActive coaches and staff, potential DSActive clubs and anyone from professional football clubs in the Premier League and Football Leagues. The education will consist of Down's syndrome information training by the DSA's information team, followed by an information session on coaching people with Down's syndrome delivered by the DSActive Football Development Officer. Each participating coach/staff will receive a DSA certificate. The DSActive staff, as you may be aware, are in the process of compiling a resource for coaching people with Down's syndrome consisting of several relevant components - the first edition of this resource will be handed out to relevant personnel on the day of the festival.

SKY/Juha Pal - Buzsaky happy at QPR - Midfielder rejects exit speculation
- Queens Park Rangers midfielder Akos Buzsaky has insisted he is fully committed to the club.
- Reports have suggested that the Hungarian midfielder, who has been hampered by injuries this season, could be looking to leave Loftus Road.
- However, he maintains that nothing could be further from the truth as he is enjoying life with the Championship pacesetters.
- "This is not true that I wanted to leave my club. I was injured but now I'm over it," Buzsaky told Nemzeti Sport.
- "I'm committed to QPR. I have one year left on my contract and I'm self-assured.
- "I play regularly at a club which has very good chances for promotion."
Bright future
- Buzsaky is excited about what the future might hold for QPR, while he has also paid tribute to manager Neil Warnock for creating a team that is strong in defence as well as attack.
- "We've been leading the table through the whole season, and if we earn seven points in our next three games then we're promoted," said the 28-year-old.
- "Our manager knows what he wants, he knows how to develop a team in the Championship.
- "Our defence is the best, we have lost only four times. When our strikers don't score it doesn't mean that we lose the game.
- "This is a league where it's true that the last can beat the first, so balance is an essential condition for success.
- "Neil Warnock could make QPR a balanced team. Our squad is strong as well as the financial conditions of the club." Sky

Paul Warburton/Fulham Chronicle - QPR plan swoop for Wolves striker Kevin Doyle
- QPR are keen to make Kevin Doyle their first Premiership signing.
- The Wolves and Republic of Ireland forward would cost a record £8million-plus – and any deal would depend on relegation-threatened Wanderers swapping places with Hoops in the top flight.
- The man named as Irish footballer of the year 2010 is set to lead the line for the Republic against Macedonia in tomorrow’s (Saturday) Euro qualifier – but if Rangers get their way, he would lead their challenge in the top flight, assuming the Championship leaders stay where they are all the way to May.
- "It might be tough to get Doyle," said an Rs insider, "but he would be just the player needed if the club is promoted."
- The 27-year-old joined Wolves from Reading in 2009 and still has another two years on his contract after this one. Wolverhampton manager Mick McCarthy would be loathe to let Doyle go – but not as loathe as the player would be to drop a division with Euro 2012 just around the corner.
- Officially, nobody at Loftus Road is talking about promotion, but behind the scenes plans are taking shape for a return to the top flight for the first time in 15 years.

Adel Taarabt is baffling and brilliant, Neil Warnock's just brilliant - Derry
Shaun Derry tells Metro how the lure of a third spell working for colourful manager Neil Warnock was key to him joining QPR’s push for promotion - as well as waxing lyrical about playmaker Adel Taarabt.

No matter the situation, wherever the club, or how dire the circumstances, something always draws Shaun Derry back to Neil Warnock’s management.

The midfielder linked up with Warnock for the third time in his career last summer, when he followed the 62-year-old to QPR.

His reward is a Championship promotion tilt that seems set to end in top-flight football come May.

Warnock’s men lead nearest rivals Norwich by nine points and look certain to be crowned champions.

How different, then, from the scenario Derry faced when Warnock persuaded him to join Crystal Palace for a second time in 2008, eventually helping them retain Championship status on the final day of last season, with the Eagles in administration.

Derry was convinced by the merits of a new challenge, though, when Warnock wanted him at Loftus Road.

‘It was raw having escaped relegation last season,’ recalled Derry who also played for Warnock at Sheffield United.

‘Over the summer I thought “what do I do?” At Palace with the takeover you wondered if they’d still exist. No disrespect to Palace but now I feel I’m at a place with so much stability.’

Derry dispels the popular image of Warnock as a fearsome, win-at-all-costs boss, insisting his man-management is what players are drawn to.

‘Everyone makes a decision on what they see in the dug-out. We see him in a different light,’ he added.

‘He knows how to get his point across. [But] the majority of the players, even those out of the team, would speak very highly of him.’

No one will have tested Warnock’s patience this term more than playmaker Adel Taarabt, whose 15 goals and eye-catching displays won him the Championship Player of the Year Award on Sunday night.

Derry said: ‘Adel on his day is unplayable, on another you’re pulling your hair out. But there’s no denying single-handedly at times this year he’s got us back into games or won them with a piece of magic.’

For now, sewing up the title matters to Derry, who has played all but one of the club’s 38 league games so far.

He adds: ‘It would be really terrible for the players, the fans and the owners for us to be in this position and to throw it away now.’

Gorkss Captain of Latvia

- Haaretz previewing Israel vs Latvia
"...One player who has no reason to fear his spot on the roster is the captain, Gorkss, who is adept at utilizing free kicks and is an effective header, something which the Israelis found out during their last meeting against the Latvians. The 29-year-old defender signed a lucrative contract this season with Queens Park Rangers of the English Football League Championship. Yet even his presence in the middle of the Latvian defense is not enough to assuage observers..." Haaretz
