THE STAR - NEIL WARNOCK READY FOR JAY BOTHROYD APPROACH

QPR will step up their chase for England striker Jay Bothroyd now the transfer window is officially open.

Despite the confusion surrounding the position of current Loftus Road boss Neil Warnock, the Hoops top brass are pressing ahead in pursuit of their summer targets.

And, after failing to persuade Newcastle winger Wayne Routledge and Peterborough hitman Craig Mackail-Smith to sign for them in recent days, the west Londoners are now turning their attention towards Bothroyd (left).

Having scored 41 times in 116 league games for Cardiff, Bothroyd appears finally to be fulfilling the huge potential he first showed as a youth player at Arsenal.

However, that impressive return for the Welsh club, which earned him an England cap last season, has not been enough to attract significant interest in his services from more established Premier League clubs.

Even though Bothroyd, who will be 29 in August, is a free transfer after refusing to sign a new deal with Cardiff, only Celtic have made a serious inquiry to date.

But the former Coventry hitman is believed to be keen on a move to QPR – as long as they prove they have the ambition to survive in the top flight. The Star

THE MIRROR - Baggies enter chase for ex-Cardiff striker

West Brom are ready to hijack Queen’s Park Rangers’ bid to sign former Cardiff striker Jay Bothroyd.

The 28-year-old, who won an England cap last winter, is chasing a move to the Premier League after letting his contract run out.

And Albion manager Roy Hodgson, who wants to find a big front man to partner last season’s top scorer Peter Odemwingie, will give him the chance.

Everton and SPL champions Rangers are also monitoring Bothroyd, who has scored 41 goals in three years at Cardiff." The Mirror

SKY - QPR enter Mackail-Smith race

.Leicester City and West Ham are thought to head a list of suitors for a player who scored 35 goals last season.

It was expected the talented striker would move to the Foxes after Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony said on Friday a deal was looking imminent.

But QPR are now also thought to be in the running though and Fry has now revealed he is waiting on an answer from the Scotland international.

With Peterborough unable to make market moves of their own until the transfer has been sorted, Peterborough director of football Fry admits he is becoming increasingly frustrated by the situation.

"I can tell you that the chairman Darragh MacAnthony has accepted three bids and given three clubs permission to speak to Craig and his agent, two of those clubs, West Ham and Leicester have spoken to them," he told Talk Sport.

"Prior to that Neil Warnock at QPR was given permission to talk to him but I haven't spoken to Craig for three days so he obviously hasn't agreed terms with West Ham or Leicester.

"There are seven other bids that we've turned down that are very substantial, four other clubs have been on to me to say that they're selling their centre forward for so much and they want to put half of that into buying Craig, things like that.

"We've given Craig the opportunity to speak to three clubs and as of yet he's not decided to go anywhere which is very frustrating from our point of view.

"The boy scored 35 goals in the league last year, he's got 99 goals in four seasons with Peterborough, the chairman said stay another year help us get back into the Championship and we won't stand in your way.

"We were hoping that he'd be gone by now because we've got targets as well that we're trying to get in." Sky

QPR are shock movers for Real Madrid’s Spanish starlet Sergio Canales – with an offer to take him on loan for the season.

PEOPLE/Alan Nixon - QPR transfer news: Shock loan offer for Sergio Canales of Real Madrid

QPR are shock movers for Real Madrid’s Spanish starlet Sergio Canales – with an offer to take him on loan for the season.

Attacking midfielder Canales has been told that he can leave the Bernabeu for a year as he does not figure immediately in Jose Mourinho’s plans.

And Real are keen to send him to England to gain experience.

Rangers have asked for Canales on a temporary basis, with a top agent speaking to Real officials in an attempt to broker the surprise transfer.

Canales has also been chased by Aston Villa, with Alex McLeish poised to fly out to meet him, while Everton have a long-term interest but need their resources for other areas of David Moyes’ team.

The deal would be a dream for QPR, whose owners would only have to pay his wages.

Boss Neil Warnock (left) has witnessed several of his targets fade away because the Hoops have not committed hard cash to signing them.

Canales, 20, could also be a hit on commercial basis as he is one of the most popular Real players because of his model-boy looks.

One potential snag is that he will probably miss the start of the season on international duty. Canales is due to lead Spain at the World Cup for Under-20s in Colombia at the end of this month. Meanwhile, QPR could lose their star man Adel Taarabt after Paris St Germain tabled a £13.5million bid for the 22-year-old.

Warnock will want to keep Taarabt but PSG, now backed by cash-rich Qatari owners, have identified the playmaker as their top target. People
