Football League Supporters Survey --FANS CALL FOR TECHNOLOGY
- Fans of Football League clubs have called on the football authorities to introduce technological assistance for referees in the largest supporter consultation in domestic sport.
- The Football League Supporters Survey 2010, which records the views of more than 36,000 fans from across the world's original league football competition, reveals that 87% of those polled would favour the use of technology to assist referees with their decisions.
- However, there is continued debate over what form that assistance should take with 39% believing it should be used 'wherever possible', 27% on decisions 'inside the penalty box only' and 21% on 'goal line decisions only'.

An overwhelming majority of supporters (88%) would also like to see technology used by the football authorities in order to take retrospective disciplinary action against players in instances where video replays show they have 'dived' to win free-kicks and penalties.

Asked to identify what The Football League's main priority should be, nearly half of the sample (45%) pinpointed 'ensuring the long term financial survival of its 72 member clubs' as being key. This was followed by 'ensuring fair competition between its member clubs' (18%) and 'developing young football talent for the future' (13%).

With the above in mind, the 2010 Survey also reveals that 56% of supporters would support the use of restrictions on player salaries or the numbers of players clubs can sign.

Fans also took the opportunity to have their say on one of the game's age-old debates and narrowly plumped for 'entertaining football' over 'winning' as the most important part of the matchday experience.

In launching the report, Football League Chairman, Greg Clarke, said: "Once again, fans have taken the opportunity in their thousands to tell us what they think about The Football League, their clubs and the matches they watch. We value their input greatly and will use it to continue moving our clubs and competitions forward.

"In previous seasons we have given FIFA the opportunity to trial the use of technology in our competitions and that offer remains on the table".

Warnock Wants Two or Three New Forwards
QPR Official Site - IT'S TIME TO ICE THE CAKE

- Neil Warnock is preparing to put the 'icing on the cake' when it comes to his summer signings.
- Rangers have already swooped for Paddy Kenny, Shaun Derry, Jamie Mackie and Leon Clarke this summer, but the R's gaffer is still targeting a few more fresh faces.
- Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk this morning, Warnock revealed he has plenty of irons in the fire, but doesn't expect too many deals to happen this week.
- "There's plenty of players we're interested in," he said.
- "I'm confident we can get deals done, but not necessarily this week.
- "It's been hard work this summer, but now we're looking to put the icing on the cake.
- "I still want two or three forwards - that's the area I'm specifically targeting now.
- "We need that extra fire-power in the final third if we're going to compete."

Ben Kosky/Kilburn Times - Agyemang aims to regain his place at QPR
- FORGOTTEN man Patrick Agyemang is eager to relaunch his Loftus Road career when QPR's players return for pre-season training on Thursday.

The striker endured a nightmare season, starting just two league games under Jim Magilton before Rangers shipped him out to Bristol City for a miserable loan spell.

But Agyemang is determined to force his way back into the Rs side - even though manager Neil Warnock has already signed two new forwards and stated his intention to add more.

"It feels like a fresh start and I'm going back there to fight for a place," Agyemang told the Times. "I'm excited about going back, seeing the lads I haven't seen for a while and meeting the new players.

"Everyone had a meeting with the manager at the end of last season, just before we went on holiday. He said he liked the look of me and told me 'just make sure you're ready'.

"I know he likes his strikers and he made it clear he was going to bring more in, which is good for the club because we needed to freshen up the squad.

"It's all very well bringing loan players in, but it's better if you don't have people coming and going all the time."

Until Warnock signed up Plymouth's Jamie Mackie and Leon Clarke from Sheffield Wednesday, Agyemang and the out-of-favour Rowan Vine were the only senior forwards on QPR's books.

Agyemang and Vine formed a fruitful partnership after joining Rangers two and a half years ago, but both have struggled for fitness and form more recently.

While Vine turned down potential loan moves last season, Agyemang accepted the chance of a three-month spell at Bristol City - but admits he gained little from the experience.

A groin injury kept the 29-year-old out of the team for two months and he failed to find the net in the seven appearances he did make as City slid down the Championship table.

"I didn't really enjoy my time there - it was a bad experience," declared Agyemang. "We lost my first game 6-0 to Cardiff and things soon went from bad to worse.

"I had an injury that kept niggling at me and the team were going through a bad period, so it was an uphill battle.

"But I'm looking ahead now. I'm aiming to get a good pre-season, hopefully with no injuries and I want to make this a positive year."

Meanwhile, Rangers' Championship trip to Bristol City has been brought forward for live coverage on Sky Sports and will now kick off at 7.45pm on Friday October 22. Kilburn Times

- Reading Deny QPR McAnuff Bid
Get Reading - McDermott: There has been no interest in Reading FC's McAnuff
By Matthew Sadler June 30, 2010
Brian McDermott has dismissed reports that Reading have turned down a bid from Championship rivals QPR for Jobi McAnuff.
It was rumoured that the west London side had offered a fee in the region of £1.5million for the former Wimbledon, West Ham United, Cardiff City, Crystal Palace and Watford winger, but McDermott insists he has had no contact with QPR.
He said: "I don’t know anything about that – it’s not true. We will take every transfer on its own merit, but there has been no interest at all" Get Reading

Sky - Royals shun QPR bid - Rangers try to land winger McAnuff
- "Reading have turned down an offer from Queens Park Rangers for winger Jobi McAnuff, skysports.com understands.
- The 28-year-old is being tracked by a number of clubs, but Rangers are leading the chase and they tested Reading's resolve with an offer worth around £1.5million.
- McAnuff had a very good season with the Royals last year, and Reading are seemingly keen to keep him.
- The former Watford, Crystal Palace and Cardiff has two years left on his current deal at the Madejski Stadium.
- It now remains to be seen if QPR will come back with a bigger bid, or if any of McAnuff's other suitors will join the bidding. Sky

- Q&A With Les Ferdinand
World Cup 2010 - 60 seconds with Les Ferdinand
Eurosport - Tue, 29 Jun
The former England striker spoke to us about flying helicopters and his old school hip hop tastes.
..Who was your sporting hero?
Muhammad Ali. He was an inspiration. I am a boxing fan but, for me, he was the first global black sports star who was able to speak their mind and be excellent in what they did.

What would you have done if you hadn't become a footballer?
I didn't complete my schooling as well as I would have liked, so I would have gone back and got myself some sort of trade. What that would have been I'm not quite sure. I was giving myself until I was 20 to make it. That was the cut-off point.

Which team did you most enjoyed beating?
Everton, more than anybody else. I just always had loads of stick from their supporters. Consequently I scored more goals against them than any other team.

What is your most embarrassing moment on the pitch?
Scoring an own goal was pretty embarrassing. I got one at Crystal Palace while I was with QPR.

To balance that, which goal stands out as your best?
There was one for Spurs against Manchester United at Old Trafford (on the final day of the season in 1999). You don't get to score many goals up there, but I lobbed Peter Schmeichel from an angle. I thought to myself "that's not a bad goal", but I couldn't celebrate, because it was the year that Arsenal and United were battling for the title, and I knew that if we beat them Arsenal would win the title.

Who had the best dressing room banter?
When I was at QPR, the lads were great. Ian Holloway was great, Alan McDonald was great, it was fantastic
. When any player comes out of football, they always miss the banter....

- Ex-QPR Youth Goalie Liam O'Brien
Portsmouth News - O'Brien pulled out of England duty 27 June 2010 By Neil Allen
- Liam O'Brien has been pulled out of England Under-19 duty in a
bid to solve Pompey's goalkeeping crisis.
- The 18-year-old was scheduled to fly out to France next month as part of Noel Blake's squad for the European Championship finals.
- That would have left Steve Cotterill without a single keeper on his books for the pre-season programme.
- It has prompted the Blues to request O'Brien – who has one cap to his name - is not included after all.
- Instead, the former QPR starlet will return to training on Thursday and is likely to start the first pre-season friendly against Havant & Waterlooville on Saturday, July 10.
- Cotterill said: 'We have not got a goalkeeper so I'm afraid it's something we have had to do.
- 'As it stands, we are desperately short of keepers in the squad and we don't know the situation with David James.
- 'We could be given dispensation by the Football League to sign another one even though there is an embargo.
- 'But at the moment we need somebody in goal so Liam will not be going off with England next month.
- 'We are grateful to the FA for understanding our predicament.'
- Another option for Cotterill is Jon Stewart, who was at Fratton Park until the end of the 2008/09 campaign.
- The former Weymouth keeper turned down a contract that summer to achieve his ambition of playing abroad.
- Yet he returned at the tail-end of last season to play in the reserves for two games as a traillist.
- Since then, Stewart, who is highly regarded by goalkeeping coach Dave Coles, has been offered a permanent deal – before Cotterill became manager. Portsmouth News

News re Ex-QPR Martin Allen (who was briefly back at Loftus Road last season] -

Gloucestershire Echo
'Mad Dog' Martin Allen gives hope to young footballers in South Africa
- FORMER Cheltenham Town boss Martin Allen is doing his bit improve the standard of football coaching in South Africa.
- The 44-year-old, nicknamed Mad Dog, is working with young coaches in Cape Town as part of the Coaching for Hope initiative. The scheme, which is running alongside the World Cup, aims to equip local coaches with skills to take back to youngsters living in impoverished townships.
- Allen, who was in charge at Whaddon Road from September 2008 to December 2009, described the experience as a "life changing", speaking on BBC 1's Match of the Day.
- "The conditions you work in and the equipment you have available to you are not always ideal," he said.
- "We work on a small patch of grass in someone's car park. We've got boys from 14 through to 17. They've got no mobile phones and some of them don't even have football boots.
- "But we make the best of it. They don't have much equipment, but they've got plenty of enthusiasm and energy."
- Funded by the League Managers Association, the scheme has benefited some 30,000 children across western and southern Africa. As well as teaching football skills, it aims to increase HIV awareness.
- Allen, who is leading coaching clinics, was taken on a tour of a township where some 700,000 people live in makeshift houses, mostly fashioned from pieces of corrugated metal.
"The guys I've been working with work in those types of areas," he added.
"We're just trying to help teach drills and skills and fun games for them to take back to the townships.
"It's an absolute pleasure to work with these lads, and the coaches are the same. There is a different work ethic to when you're dealing with people at home."
The former Queens Park Rangers and West Ham player took over the Robins job after spells in charge at Barnet, Brentford, Milton Keynes Dons and Leicester City.
Clive Gowing, chairman of the Robins Trust, said both the club and the manager had moved on from the split.
"We've now got Mark Yates in charge and are looking forward," he said.
"I'm glad to see Martin Allen is giving something back to the game by taking part in such a worthwhile scheme." Gloucestershire Echo

QPR boss flys to Morocco in bid to sign Spurs star
Jun 24 2010 By Paul Warburton

Adel Taarabt

QPR boss Neil Warnock took the extraordinary step of flying to Morocco this week in a bid to persuade Adel Taarabt his future is at Rangers.

Warnock is braving the 35-degree heat and 3,000-mile round-trip to Marrakesh to meet the midfielder in his own country following his succession of eye-catching performances last season.

The 21-year-old joined Rs on-loan for the second time last August from Tottenham, and during his 41 appearances in hoops scored a wonder goal against Preston in October – thus coming second in the Football League’s goal-of-the-season competition.

Warnock admitted he stood a better chance of talking Taarabt into a pemanent deal at Loftus Road if he met him face-to-face.

He said: “It’s difficult to discuss things over the phone, and I want to let Tarbs know we’re serious.

“It won’t be a question of a loan deal – and if he believes that we’re a club who will play in the Premiership the season after this one, then we need to sort something out with Spurs.”

Taarabt would cost a minimum £2million, and has already claimed he is a target for top clubs in Spain. But Warnock reckons he will remind the Moroccan international he is better off at a club that really wants him.

The manager added: “Does he want to jump into the unknown and languish in the reserves perhaps? Or does he want to play for a club that believes in him, and can further his career?” Ealing Gazette

QPR Official Site - R'S TO TOUR ITALY

Posted on: Mon 21 Jun 2010

The R's First Team squad will travel to Italy in July for two pre-season friendly fixtures.

Neil Warnock's side will depart for Milano Marittima in the province of Ravenna on Tuesday 20th July.

During their seven day stay on Italian soil, Rangers will lock horns with Equipe Romagna and Lega Pro Prima Divisione side Ravenna Calcio.

Warnock's men will play Equipe Romagna at lo Stadio dei Pini on Wednesday 21st July (9.00pm kick off), before locking horns with local side Ravenna on Sunday 25th July (9.00pm kick off) at Stadio Bruno Benelli.

Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, Warnock expressed his delight at the tour, commenting: "It'll be a key part of our pre-season preparations.

"The facilities at the training camp are excellent and the weather at that time of year should be great for the lads to train in."

Warnock added: "It will be a great chance for the new lads to settle in and get to know their new team-mates in a different environment."vQPR

QPR Official Site - GAFFER EYES TRANSFER SWOOPS

Neil Warnock has revealed he is continuing to make enquiries in the transfer market, as the countdown to the 2010/11 npower Championship gathers pace.

The R's boss has already swooped for Jamie Mackie, Leon Clarke and Paddy Kenny over recent weeks and with one or two more irons in the fire, Warnock is confident of adding to his squad again soon.

"I've made enquiries about a lot of players," he told www.qpr.co.uk.

"I'd like to get at least another couple in, maybe even three or

[b]"We need to balance the books as well though.

"There'll be players who leave and players who sign - that's the nature of the business we're in.

"I think we need a squad of 25, but if we can get a squad of 22 without loaning players, we'll be in good shape."

Warnock added: "I don't think QPR fans will have too many complaints once I've got my squad together.

"They showed at the end of last season that they trust me.

"I think the important thing is getting the spirit right.

"We need to get the whole Club pulling together - the players, the staff and the fans.

"It's important that we do well.

"I've not got long left. I want to be on my tractor in three years or so, so it's very important that we push on next season." QPR

Shaun Derry's QPR switch in doubt

QPR were last night attempting to rescue the deal that brings Shaun Derry to the club after Ipswich Town made it plain they intend to snatch the player from under Rangers' noses.

The Crystal Palace midfelder has long been on the Rs radar as a replacement for Gavin Mahon in the gap between defence and midfield – but the Tractor Boys are ready to use all means available to get Derry for themselves.

It’s understood Ipswich gave notice to Rangers of their intentions to make sure agents did not start a bidding war over wages, but Rs chairman Gianni Paladini has moved quickly to keep Derry on course for Loftus Road next season.

An insider said: “Boss Neil Warnock has set his heart on getting a player he knows well from his time at Crystal Palace – and Rangers are ready to pull out the stops to complete the Derry signing.”

Derry was alerted to Ipswich’s interest because Warnock refuses to guarantee the 32-year-old a permanent berth. The manager intends to chop and change his formation next season and dispense with a holding midfielder from time to time. Ealing Gazette

Sky Sports - Ambrose saga irks Warnock - Rangers boss will not increase bid for Eagles ace Last updated: 20th June 2010
- QPR boss Neil Warnock has aired his frustration at the ongoing transfer saga regarding Darren Ambrose.
- The Rangers manager thought he had agreed a deal for the Crystal Palace midfielder and was set to bring him to Loftus Road.
- However, that move was put in place while the Eagles struggled under the weight of financial upheaval and summer sales looked inevitable.
- Since then they have secured new investment and the need to cash in on their top talents has eased.
- As a result, they feel they now have every right to demand a higher fee for Ambrose - who was a revelation for the club last season.
- Warnock, though, has been left fuming by the actions of his former employers and insists he will not be budging from the fee he has already had accepted.
- "Palace's new consortium think he's worth more," said the irate coach.
- "We're talking £750,000 and add ons up to £1m. I won't be going any higher than that.
- "Darren, I'm sure, will be disappointed if he doesn't come." Skysports

- Ex-QPR Director Kevin Steele Charged With Conpsiracy to Commit Fraud

Telegraph By Harry Wilson - 18 Jun 2010 - Ex-Mishcon de Reya partner hit with allegation of fraud
- A former partner at London law firm Mishcon de Reya was one of two men charged on Thursday by the Serious Fraud Office as part of an investigation into an alleged conspiracy to fraudulently obtain an £18m loan.
- Kevin Steele, 50, was charged yesterday along with Michael Shephard, a former property developer, with conspiring to persuade Swiss private bank EFG Bank to obtain the loan on the basis that they held a large deposit with the Jersey branch of another Swiss private bank, Bank Julius Baer.
- Mr Steele and Mr Shephard have each been charged with conspiracy to commit fraud and conspiracy to use false documents. Additionally, Mr Steele has been charged with abusing his position to steal £1.8m from an account held in the name of Mr Shephard.
- Both men were yesterday released on bail and have been ordered to appear at Southwark Crown Court on August 12 for a further hearing. No pleas were entered. Telegraph

The Times Jun 18, 2010 -Former Mishcon partner Steele charged over 'fraudulent' loan
- Kevin Steele, a former property partner at Mishcon de Reya, has been charged with conspiring to fraudulently obtain a €22 million loan.

Steele and former client, property developer Michael Shephard, were charged by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and released on conditional bail on Thursday.

According to Mishcon, Steele was “expelled” from the firm in September 2008. He and Shephard face charges of conspiracy to commit fraud and conspiracy to use false documents.

The SFO claims that in 2008 the pair fraudulently secured a €22 million loan from Zurich-based EFG Bank. Steele has also been charged with abuse of position relating to £1.8 million that went missing from a client account.

Mishcon said: "Kevin Steele was expelled from Mishcon de Reya in September 2008, nearly two years ago. The firm carried out a thorough internal investigation and brought in the police and the SRA.

“It has ensured that the interests of its clients have been fully protected. As the matter is in court, no further statements will be made."

The pair are due to appear before Southwark Crown Court on 12 August The Times

- Former Mishcon de Reya property partner Kevin Steele has been charged by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) with conspiring to fraudulently obtain a €22m (£18.4m) loan.
- Steele and his former client, property developer Michael Shephard, were charged and released on conditional bail yesterday. They are due to appear before Southwark Crown Court later this summer (12 August) to face charges of conspiring to commit fraud and conspiracy to use false documents.

The pair are alleged to have persuaded Zurich-based EFG Bank in 2008 to provide a €22m (£18.4m) loan on the basis that Shephard had on deposit the sum of £76m at Bank Julius Baer in Guernsey, which was accepted as security for a loan.

In addition, Steele has been charged with abuse of position between October 2007 and September 2008 in relation to the procuring of an undertaking given to EFG in respect of the loan, the general mishandling of Shephard's client account and the theft of £1.8m from that account to settle an unrelated civil claim.
- Steele was removed from Mishcons in September 2008 when the City firm referred the matter to the police and the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).
- A Mishcons spokesperson commented: "Kevin Steele was expelled from Mishcon de Reya in September 2008, nearly two years ago. The firm carried out a thorough internal investigation and brought in the police and the SRA. It has ensured that the interests of its clients have been fully protected. As the matter is in court, no further statements will be made." Legal Week

This is Money SFO charge two with £18m fraud Daily Mail
18 June 2010,
A former property partner at Princess Diana's divorce law firm, Mishcon de Reya, and a former property developer have been charged with conspiracy to defraud a bank out of £18.3m.
In a case brought by the Serious Fraud Office and Warwickshire Police, Michael Shephard and Kevin Steel, formerly of Mishcon de Reya, are alleged to have falsified documents to make it appear that Shephard had £76m on deposit at Bank Julius Baer in Guernsey.
This was allegedly accepted as security for a loan Shephard secured from EFG Bank in Zurich.

The SFO charges that the fraud occurred between July 1, 2008 and August 22, 2008.

Defendants found guilty of conspiracy to defraud can potentially be sent to jail for up to seven years, although it is thought any sentence would be a good deal shorter than that.

Both defendants have been released on conditional bail.

The next hearing will be on August 12 at Southwark Crown Court.

Lawyers for Shephard said: 'Mr Shephard looks forward to seeing the evidence relied upon to support these charges and to defending himself in court.'

Steele's lawyer could not be reached last night. This is Money

FLASHBACK July 2006 - When Saturday Comes, from 2006
As good as it got Queens Park Rangers 1975-76
Queens Park Rangers 1975-76

- Thirty years ago a west London club very nearly won the title – and it would have been a popular success, too. Graham Dunbar recalls QPR's finest 42 games
- It is April 17, 2006, Easter Monday, and Queens Park Rangers lose 3-2 at Norwich in the definitive meaningless and mediocre end-of-season game. Two teams playing second-rate, second-tier football in what could be the worst five-goal affair anyone has seen; a match with no significance beyond reminding both clubs that the Premiership is a distant dream.
- Flip back 30 years and it is April 17, 1976, Easter Saturday in the old Division One, and QPR again lose 3-2 at Carrow Road, with rather more at stake. On a blazing hot holiday weekend, the top-flight title is on the line and, if you buy even slightly into the arguments of chaos theory, the future of European club football is about to be shaped.
- A hugely popular QPR team would lose the title by a single point to Liverpool, who, trophyless the previous year, would beat Wolves in a controversial last game, finish the season by winning the UEFA Cup and, 12 months later, hoist the European Cup for the first time. For want of a win in Norfolk, chaos theory says, the Reds’ rule over Europe was allowed to happen.
- Gerry Francis was Rangers captain in a season that kicked off with a 2-0 defeat of Liverpool at Loftus Road. He was their inspiration during a glorious final 15-match run of 13 wins, a draw and that single defeat on the penultimate Saturday. Francis would recall: “Those points lost at Norwich could have been the difference. You can’t believe we lost the game.”
- The game has lost plenty in the last three decades. Comparing the state of our football nation in 1976 with today is fairly banal and pointless, but let’s have a go – what QPR achieved perhaps compares with what Wigan did for the first half of this season.
- A decade before becoming every neutral’s delight, QPR had meandered round 15 home grounds and settled in Division Three when Jim Gregory, a real-life Arthur Daley before the fictional one, joined the board. Money began to be spent, on Les Allen, a Double-winner at Tottenham, and Rodney Marsh from Fulham – the start of a series of raids on London rivals that served Rangers spectacularly well.
- Alec Stock’s side won Division Three in 1967 at a stroll, just weeks after leaping into the nation’s living rooms in maybe the best League Cup final of all, the first at Wembley, before a live television audience – when that actually meant something. First Division West Bromwich Albion’s 2-0 half-time lead was brushed aside by goals from Roger Morgan, Marsh after a mazy dribble and Mark Lazarus.
- Another promotion the next year just set up QPR as the next Northampton Town, for a debut top-flight season even Sunderland fans would count as disappointing. But Gordon Jago arrived and built his 1972-73 promotion team by selling Marsh and gambling on the genius of Stan Bowles. A procession of apprentices were blended with wise old heads such as Frank McLintock, two years on from leading Arsenal to the Double, then David Webb (whose barrel chest hardly suited being wrapped in hoops) and John Hollins, downsized from Chelsea to Shepherd’s Bush.
- When Jago went early in 1974-75, another King’s Road refugee, Dave Sexton, spent most of his first season in charge dealing with Bowles’s tantrums and assembling a midfield even Stan would be mad to turn away from. Francis started and bare-shinned winger Dave Thomas came on in Don Revie’s first England game – a 3-0 qualifying group win against eventual European champions Czechoslovakia – and full-backs Dave Clement and Ian Gillard soon joined them. At Revie’s time of greatest need, the World Cup qualifier in Italy in November 1976, he turned to Bowles. (It didn’t work, but that’s not the point.)
- Francis was 23 when Revie made him captain after humiliating Scotland in 1975. “Just to get in the England team you were competing with Bell, Ball, Hudson, Brooking and Currie for just two places in midfield. It was an honour for a QPR player to be England captain.” Gerry announced his authority with the goal of the season past Ray Clemence as Rangers started the season by beating Liverpool; Stan weighed in with a hat-trick in a 5-1 demolition of Derby County, the reigning champions, a week later.
- Quite how and why QPR did not win the title is a football tragedy. They were the best and most entertaining team, were unbeaten at home, never slumped and beat every side in the division except West Ham. Frankly, Norwich fans should be ashamed of their club – and their good fortune on the day – for spiking Rangers’ champagne.
- Francis has a vivid recall of the game that should be disturbing in a grown man with a long and successful career, and is actually painful to hear. “We totally dominated but you have games where nothing seems to go right. In the first half I was sent through by Stan and lobbed Kevin Keelan from 25, 30 yards but it landed on top of the net. Keelan made a couple of great saves from me.” Match reports detail Keelan, himself a loveable Seventies maverick, laughing when a close-range Webb header hit him and bounced away.
- At the other end, a ludicrous mix-up gifted Ted McDougall a goal before a manically determined Thomas equalised. While Liverpool were beating Stoke City 5-3 at Anfield, Norwich scored two more – a fluke shot from Peter Morris and Phil Boyer’s header while offside – before giving Rangers a late own goal.
- Rangers finished with home wins against Arsenal and then Leeds on the last Saturday, as Liverpool put their feet up while John Toshack played for Wales in a European Championship quarter-final against Yugoslavia. Ten days later, Francis and co watched in a Thames TV studio as Liverpool struck three times in the last 13 minutes at Molineux.
- “The bad taste in our mouth wasn’t necessarily from losing the Norwich game, though people point the finger at it, but the way Liverpool didn’t have to play their last game on the same day. They should have played under the same pressure – we were in a television studio watching our season slip away. When Kevin Keegan scored most of us walked out.”
- The last hurrah for Sexton’s side was a goal-strewn run to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals, before losing on penalties at AEK Athens, while Liverpool took the European Cup road leading to Rome and immortality against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
- Francis says: “We could have gone a long way in the European Cup. We played the sort of football that was equipped for European competition, but there’s no doubt Liverpool were an outstanding side. Quality-wise, we were a match for Liverpool, but they could strengthen and we were a small, selling club.”
- So QPR almost matched the Derby side of 1972 in winning the league three seasons after getting promoted. In 1978 Nottingham Forest would do it a year after coming up in third spot. Instead, Rangers joined Ipswich Town at club level and Holland on the world stage as vibrant sides in the total football era who fell just short of a defining triumph but are all the more beloved for it. “Everyone says QPR were their second-favourite team at that time, a nice, family club – like Ipswich and Norwich – who were consistent and could beat anybody on their day,” says Francis.
- A generation on and a world away, QPR, Derby and Ipswich are all mired in the second division having spent parts of the 21st century in administration. And whatever happened to Liverpool in Europe? WSC

The Times April 18, 2004

Caught in Time: QPR, championship runners-up, 1975-76Rob Maul

Deep within the BBC Television centre in White City, London, QPR players congregated around a small TV set to watch the final game of the season. Ten days earlier, QPR had beaten Leeds at Loftus Road to complete their League campaign, sending them top of the old First Division. Because of Liverpool’s involvement in the Uefa Cup, the Merseyside club still had to play Wolves. The game at Molineux was crucial, as only one point separated the teams.
“It would not happen now,” says Gerry Francis, QPR captain that season, who saw the second half at the BBC. “It would have been fairer if Liverpool and QPR had played at the same time.” Despite trailing 1-0 with 15 minutes to go, Liverpool scored three times to claim the title. “How many chances will QPR have of winning the championship?” said Francis.

QPR’s manager, Dave Sexton, had built a strong team, including Francis, Stan Bowles and Frank McLintock. They remained unbeaten in the League at home. In 1979 the club was relegated to the Second Division, but, for 10 days at least, QPR were the best team in the country. [The numbers refer to a photograph, which is not carried on the website.]

1 Steve Jones A former QPR apprentice, Jones did not play for the first team. In 1979 he moved to Walsall and then to Wimbledon, where he remained until 1982, when injury ended his career. Owns a nightclub in Windsor

2 Tommy Cunningham Signed on a free from Chelsea in May 1975, Cunningham made 30 appearances before moving to Wimbledon in March 1979. He played most of his career at Leyton Orient and later became assistant manager at Brisbane Road. Now director of football at Harlow Town in the Ryman Division One North

3 Tony Tagg The central defender played four times under Sexton before moving to Millwall on a free transfer and then Wimbledon. He later became a taxi driver

4 Don Givens Givens won 56 caps for the Republic of Ireland, for whom he scored 19 goals. He coached Arsenal’s youth team and then worked in Switzerland. He has been Ireland’s under-21 coach since 1999

5 Martyn Busby Busby had two spells at QPR. He also played for Portsmouth and Notts County. He broke his leg during his second spell with the club and then became manager of non-League clubs Beaconsfield United and Maidenhead United. Runs a painting and decorating business near Slough

6 Phil Parkes If Ray Clemence and Peter Shilton had not been around, Parkes would have been England goalkeeper for many years. He won the FA Cup with West Ham in 1980 after they smashed the transfer record for a goalkeeper (£560,000) and he played 344 games for both clubs in a career that spanned 22 years. Returned to QPR in September 1991 as goalkeeping coach, but now runs a building firm in Reading

7 David Webb Best known for his 1970 FA Cup final-winning goal for Chelsea, Webb formed a solid defensive partnership with Frank McLintock. After QPR, he played for Leicester and Derby before managing Bournemouth, Torquay, Southend and Chelsea. He runs a property business

8 Keith Pritchett A Scot who played for Wolves, Doncaster, QPR and Blackpool, Pritchett spent most of his career with Watford. Emigrated to New Zealand, where he became a manager and then a football writer

9 Richard Teale Understudy to Parkes, Teale made only two appearances before moving to Fulham in August 1976. Runs a building firm in Eggham, Surrey

10 Ron Abbott Spent his entire, but admittedly short, career with Rangers, making 54 appearances. Once the central defender left QPR, he became a London taxi driver

12 Don Shanks Moved to QPR from Luton Town in 1974, making 206 appearances and scoring 11 goals before joining Brighton on a free in 1981. Now a children’s football coach, travelling around Europe and America

13 Stan Bowles One of football’s most colourful characters, Stan was, alongside Rodney Marsh, arguably QPR’s greatest player. Gambling problems dogged his career, and he should have won more than five England caps. He started his career with Manchester City, before moving to QPR from Carlisle. Was unemployed for a long spell, until he coached with David Webb at Brentford. He is writing his second autobiography

14 Gerry Francis Captained club and country, but spent much of his career battling injury. After Rangers, he played for Crystal Palace, before returning to QPR, Coventry, Exeter, as player-manager, Cardiff, Swansea and Portsmouth. 20 John Hollins A member of Chelsea’s FA Cup and Cup Winners Cup teams of the early 1970s, Hollins later became manager at Stamford Bridge before being sacked. Managed QPR, Swansea and Rochdale. Aged 57, he manages Stockport Tiger-Star in China

21 Don Rogers Goalscoring hero of Swindon Town’s League Cup victory in 1969, Rogers came to QPR via Crystal Palace. After retiring, he opened a sports shop in Swindon

22 Dave Thomas A quick winger who joined QPR from Burnley in 1972, making 220 appearances and scoring 33 goals before joining Everton in 1977. Later became Portsmouth’s youth coach. He lives in Chichester and teaches PE at a local secondary school
