PEOPLE/Wally Downes -QPR boss Neil Warnock keeps on enjoying his Taa-lent show in the Championship

ADEL TAARABT’S stunning form could take QPR into the Premier League – but five years ago the maverick attacking midfielder would not have been given the chance.

The Moroccan shies away from defensive duties, with the 21-year-old’s attacking talent attracting all the plaudits instead.

But Hoops manager Neil Warnock knows he might not be able to afford the luxury of such an attacking player if his side reach the Premier League.

He said: “Five years ago I wouldn’t have had a Taarabt in my team because of formations and being solid.

“He’d be gone by now. I don’t think I could tolerate him if we were in the bottom half.

“I don’t think I’d have the patience and I’d have been wrong. He has proved that he can contribute to the team, whereas when I first came here I thought he was an out-and-out individual.”

If QPR beat second-place Nottingham Forest this afternoon it will put them 10 points clear of Billy Davies’ side – and a step closer to top-flight football.

But former Notts County boss Warnock fears his talisman could get lost in the punishing world of the Premier League. He is also unsure whether Taarabt’s carefree style would suit any battle for survival, should QPR get to the Premier League.

The Loftus Road touchline will be a volatile place today but Warnock believes he and his Forest counterpart have a lot in common.

He said: “Billy Davies is like me. He is passionate and he will have his critics, and I imagine as many people dislike him as they dislike me, but it’s part of the job.”

Rangers will be without the suspended Hogan Ephraim today, while Tommy Smith (hamstring) and Heidar Helguson (groin) are unlikely to feature.

Meanwhile, Marcus Tudgay has warned Warnock that his Forest side are on a mission to nick the top spot.

The striker cranked up the stakes by insisting his side are determined to get promoted to the top flight as champions.

Forest have two games in hand over QPR and are unbeaten in nine league matches, and Tudgay said: “We have had a taste of second place. Now, why not go for first?

“We’re on a high now but it might be a low next week if we allow ourselves to get carried away.

“I want to be in the Premier League and I believe we can do it. These are a great bunch of lads who are very hard working.

“It’s not pressure, not at all. We have to enjoy it while we can. You have to enjoy your successes – and beating Rangers would be a massive thing for us.” PEOPLE

QPR OFFICIAL SITE - DERRY: LET'S KEEP IT GOING
- Shaun Derry has called on his fellow R's team-mates to 'keep their good home record going' ahead of Sunday's top-of-the-table showdown with Nottingham Forest.
- In what is arguably the pick of the weekend's npower Championship fixtures, second-placed Forest travel to Loftus Road seven points behind leaders QPR - albeit with two games in hand.
- But Derry told www.qpr.co.uk: "I don't think that Sunday is crucial, not by any stretch of the imagination.
- "But it's a big game. A lot of eyes will be on us, like when we played Cardiff a few months ago.
- "We don't think it's going to be a deciding factor on what happens for the end of the season, but it's a big game."
- Sunday's live Sky Sports TV clash with the Reds will contain added spice for Derry, who was born in Nottingham and also had an eight-game loan spell at the City Ground back in the 2004/05 campaign.
- And the R's midfield man said: "I supported Notts County - across the river - as a boy, but I was still proud and privileged to pull on the Red shirt.
- "Everybody in Nottingham realises just what a history Forest have got.
- "I played eight games there and loved every minute of it."
- Derry added: "Forest have got a fantastic home record too and they've dropped the majority of their points away from home.
- "But I don't think that tells the story for what's going to happen on Sunday.
- "There will be two very confident sides going into the game.
- "We want to keep our good home record going." QPR
