Portsmouth News/Neil Allen - Redknapp Rejected QPR Job
15 October 2009
- In an exclusive interview with The News' chief sports writer Neil Allen,
Harry Redknapp gives his views on Pompey and why they'll beat the drop.
...Loyalty
- When I turned down Newcastle I was accused by a lot of newspapers of not having any ambition.
- I was happy here, it was the perfect situation for me. The training ground was half-an-hour from home and I loved working for this club.
- Around that time Birmingham also offered me a fantastic deal, David Sullivan offered me a brilliant job. I wasn't interested.
- When QPR had their rich new owners they came in and they asked me to write my own contract. I wasn't interested.- When I went to Southampton before that I accept I made a silly mistake. It was a spur-of-the-moment thing and I regretted it afterwards.
It was always Pompey for me and there were not many clubs I would have left them for..." Portsmouth News

PRESTON OFFICIAL SITE - Match Preview: QPR
- Preston North End fans travelling to Loftus Road this weekend should make the trip expecting goals. The last two trips to West London have produced a total of nine goals, but sadly for Lilywhites fans they have only harvested one point for Alan Irvine's men.
- A 3-2 defeat last season was preceded by a 2-2 draw the season prior when the Lilywhites threw away a two goal advantage in injury time.
- Though the anticipated major investment at QPR has not really materialised they remain a club with huge ambitions and great expectations.

Jim Magilton was a surprise choice as mananger when he took charge during the summer months and early results suggest that his side are currently in a transitional phase.

Magilton looks to have recruited well on the face of it, Alejandro Faurlin a £3.5m signing from Institute the headline grabbing transfer but it's the loans of Adel Taarabt (Tottenham), Tom Heaton (Man Utd), Jay Simpson (Arsenal) and Ben Watson - all from Premier League - that could make the difference.

QPR will be protecting an unbeaten home league record on Saturday, one win and three draws. The victory came in their last home performance when they defeated Barnsley 5-2, a game which included a brace of goals from talented Hungarian midfielder Akos Buzsaky.

Gaffer's Team News
"The international break has given Paul Parry a chance, he's trained with us since last Wednesday and he's looked very good.

"Callum Davidson joined in with us for part of the session on Tuesday, he joined in with us on Thursday and seems to be perfectly ok so that's good news.

"We can't just assume that he's [Paul Parry] is going to be 100 per cent at this moment. It will take him a little bit of time to get up to that, but he's looking very good in the training that we have done, both in terms of the possession and the games."

The Opposition
Turmoil on and off the field is threatening to disrupt the R's season, but then that's nothing new at a club that has become accustomed to dealing with adversity in recent years.

Jim Magilton's side were already facing up to the prospect of being without skipper Martin Rowlands for the visit of PNE this weekend. The tenacious midfielder was red carded in QPR's 2-0 defeat to Swansea a fortnight ago and was suspended for this weekend's match. But Rowlands could now be out for much longer having damaged knee ligaments in the Republic of Ireland's 0-0 draw with Montenegro in midweek.

QPR will also be without Ben Watson this weekend, he too saw red at the Liberty Stadium and will sit this one out with his fellow midfielder.

Off the field and the future Chairman Flavio Briatore is very much in the air following the Crashgate affair which saw him banned from Formula One for life.

Many are suggesting that Briatore would fall short of the Football League's fit and proper persons test, but close friend Bernie Ecclestone is not concerned.

"Nobody is worrying about it at QPR," Ecclestone, the Formula One commercial rights-holder, said. "He says that he was not involved in what happened in Crashgate and has maintained that. But anyway, what has that got to do with football? He suffered a harsh punishment in Formula One but it is not as though he could even do the same things in football."

The Gaffer
- "Flavio's very busy at the moment - but I know his thoughts on the team and he's been very positive. Everyone at the club has rallied around and we're looking to get through all of this.
- "The one missing link in Rowan's game at the moment is goals - and we adapted to a system that suits him.
- "It's affected his confidence and it's something I have to play with before making a choice. I would have liked to have taken Rowan to Ipswich before he came to QPR, and he, like Akos Buzsaky, suffered a bad injury last year. But I have to say that Akos has settled a little bit quicker."
Magilton expects Flavio to be at Loftus Road and tells londoninformer.co.uk that he can't make his mind up between Patrick Agyemang and Rowan Vine.

The Player
"He's [Magilton] a good man, he's a fair man and he picks his squad on merit.

"If you're good enough you can be in his squad, and hopefully we can all be good enough, pushing for QPR and winning.

"I've got a big respect for John [Gorman] and Jim I think they're doing a great job up there. We've amassed a really good talented squad and I don't think we're going to be too far away this season."
Former North End favourite Gareth Ainsworth is still on the playing staff at QPR and confident his side can do well this season.

One of three North End players to be away on international duty while the rest trained at Springfields, Eddie Nolan spoke to the official website about his latest international experience and North End's chances on Saturday.

First of all, it must have been a busy couple of days with the Ireland squad.

Yeah, it was busy but it was worth it in the end, we got into the Play-Offs and we were unlucky not to beat Italy.

On Saturday night, can you put into words what it was like in the ground when Ledge scored.

Everyone was buzzing, it was probably one of the best atmospheres I've ever experienced, everyone was still celebrating up to the point when Italy scored and that was a bit of a downer.

Were the lads still taking positives from the draw after the game?

To be honest it felt like a defeat if I'm honest about it, to be so close to the World Champions, but it was a draw.

For yourself as a young lad it must have been an amazing learning experience as well.

It was great to be on the bench, it was one of the biggest games I've been involved in so it was really positive.

Do you have any preferences as to who you'd like to face in the Play-Offs at all?

Any of the potential opponents are going to be tough but maybe Greece might be an easier option but it's still going to be a tough game.

Back to Championship life at the weekend, the games come thick and fast for you.

Yep, it's Saturday Tuesday Saturday and it's two tough games against QPR and Sheffield Wednesday to kick off.

They're a good team but they'll be missing their skipper Martin Rowlands who you would have been on international duty with.

Yeah, he got a bad injury against ? which is going to keep him out for about eight months which is unfortunate for him because he's just come back from one. He was going to miss Saturday anyway because he's suspended but it's unlucky for the lad.
Even without him, they have lots of good players, including the likes of Wayne Routledge who you will have come up against last season.

They have a good squad and down there especially it will be a tough game.

You played in the game last season when we lost 3-2 and most people would say we were unlucky that day.

I think we deserved at least a draw last year but that's the Championship for you, that sort of thing can happen.

Three games next week, have you, or the lads, set a mental points target for the games at all?

Not really, we'll take each game as it comes and a few wins next week would be absolutely brilliant for us.

I suppose as well it's all about the old cliché of picking up a point in away games and winning your home games.

That's what we try and do, our home form is one of the best in the division and getting points away from home adds to our position. Preston
