- When Saturday Comes (WSC) on New Football Film:
Personal Goals raises the bar for football films |
"Eric Cantona's return to the big screen as a suave detective in his new movie Switch has provoked the usual dismay about football's poor relationship with cinema. Players rarely make great actors and the drama of the sport tends not to translate to the screen. Personal Goals, by the Israeli director Ran Carmeli, is an exception. The 16-minute short, which was posted online by Future Shorts this week, tells the story of young Yaron Tranto. Yaron loves football but will never fulfil his dad's hopes and become a professional. The nine-year-old indulges his father's fantasy with stories of his onfield exploits, but with his team due to play in a cup final, his secret could be out. - Brian Glanville/World Soccer: Rotten referees: Premier League suffering from rash of bad decisions
"The Premier League is suffering from a plague of rotten referees and lamentable linesmen. Last weekend there was more depressing evidence of this.
....The following day at Old Trafford Manchester United were favoured, yet again, by a double decision which ruled poor Queens Park Rangers out of contention.
When Ashley Young of United received a pass from Wayne Rooney in the penalty box, he was plainly in an offside position. Some have blamed the linesman Ceri Richards for not raising his flag automatically. Others defend him by saying that he wasn’t given any chance to do so by the hyper active referee Lee Mason who instantly whistled for a penalty when Young was brought down – somewhat too easily – by the QPR defender, Shaun Derry. To add substantial insult to painful injury Derry, as the last man, was sent off into the bargain condemning Rangers to play for most of the game with ten men, losing 2-0.
It was the second time in short succession that QPR had been traduced by wretched officiating. At Bolton, they had scored a perfect good goal which would have put them ahead, the ball having undoubtedly crossed the line. But neither the linesman nor the referee noticed it. The ball was cleared, no goal given, and Bolton went on to win a game vital to both sides as they struggled against potential relegation..."
Guardian/Press Association - DERRY on Sending OFF & BAN
Queens Park Rangers' midfielder Shaun Derry has criticised the Football Association for its decision to uphold his red card at Old Trafford for a trip on Ashley Young.
Derry, who had hoped the FA would rescind his suspension due to a refereeing error on the grounds that Young was offside, blasted the verdict as "ridiculous" and added: "I don't know what they do at the FA but it's not working."
Derry missed his side's defeat of Swansea on Wednesday night and revealed the club had been so confident his card would be overturned he had trained as part of Mark Hughes' selected team.
Derry told the club's official call-in: "I thought it was a foregone conclusion that it would be overturned and I would be available for last night. Everyone thought the FA would put it to bed that way.
"I lined up in the training session to play, then I got a call from our assistant manager, Mark Bowen, who said it had been turned down and I was absolutely gobsmacked. To miss out on the next game is ridiculous really."
After the incident on Sunday, in which none of the officials noticed that Young was in an offside position, Rangers' manager, Mark Hughes, admitted his side were "losing faith in referees".
Hughes' mood will not be improved by the FA's response, with Derry adding: "The email we got back from the FA was one line telling me my appeal had not been successful.
"That's as far as the email went: there was no explanation as to why it was not overturned or even any indication of why I got sent off in the first place. The whole scenario is quite bizarre really.
"It was the single highlight of my career to lead a Premier League side out at Old Trafford perhaps the pinnacle of my career. So I was bitterly disappointed to say the least. It is a tough pill to swallow." Guardian

AFF -Resurgent QPR dreaming of survival
3-0 victory over Swansea boosts morale of QPR
Akos Buzsaky believes Queens Park Rangers are finally
demonstrating the spirit needed to end the fear of an immediate return
to the Championship.
The midweek 3-0 victory over Swansea moved Mark Hughes's side out of the bottom three and they could establish a bigger cushion between themselves and the relegation places with victory at West Bromwich Albion.
The Swansea win was Rangers's third successive home triumph and came on the back of notable victories over Arsenal and Liverpool.
Away from Loftus Road it has been a different story and a trip to the Hawthorns is likely to provide a stern test, with West Brom eager to extend the 10-point gap that exists between themselves and the drop zone.
But Buzsaky, the Hungary midfielder who scored his side's third goal against Swansea, believes that after a difficult campaign, recent performances have confirmed the side has the stomach for a fight.
"When you are in this situation there are two ways to go," he said. "You can just give up or fight for your lives. We are fighting for our lives.
"We know how important it is for the club and every single player in the dressing room to stay in this league.
"We know the reason we're down here is because we didn't perform as well as we should earlier in the season.
"The players realised that at the right time and now everyone is focused and concentrated."
Buzsaky was one of the stars of the club's title-winning promotion campaign last season but has featured in a much more peripheral role this season.
"I don't want to go down. Last season I was a champion. It is the worst feeling if you go down a division. To realise you are not good enough is the worst thing that could happen.
"I know it's a bit late but we're going to do it. There are five games to go and we need to play every single game to win," he said.
"It looks like we can perform better against big teams because we beat Liverpool and Arsenal and nobody would have given us a chance against them.
"At home we have started to perform well and it is a step forward but now we need to perform away from home as well. If we do that we have a fair chance."
Former England international Nicky Shorey is determined for West Brom to ensure a memorable season ends on a high note - instead of a whimper.
Albion are well on course to secure survival for the second campaign running, the first time the club has secured three consecutive seasons in the top flight since the Premier League was introduced in 1992.
And despite their thrashing at Manchester City on Wednesday, Shorey insists the season must be viewed as an unprecedented success.
He said: "We want to push on. You always want to end the season on a high because you can take that into the next season.
"If we lost the last five or six games it would still be a good season but we would be disappointed. We don't like losing games. That's not what we want.
"Hopefully we can bounce back against QPR and remind everyone that it has been a really good season." AFP
