Mail - Manchester United and Chelsea check out QPR wonderkid Raheem Sterling's England bow
- Scouts from Manchester United and Chelsea are expected to be among those crammed into Chester's Deva Stadium when 14-year-old Queens Park Rangers star Raheem Sterling turns out for his country.
The striker is set to make his debut for England's Under 16s against Northern Ireland on Thursday night and he is already on the radar of a number of Barclays Premier League clubs.
- Raheem has been with Rangers since he was 10 years old and the club's head of development Steve Gallen told the London Evening Standard: 'I'm not one bit bothered about the other clubs.
- 'QPR are a big club and at no stage has he said he wants to go.
'It is a big ambition of his to represent England. I'm just really pleased he can do that while playing for QPR.
'He has loads of natural ability. This boy can pass, shoot, head it, score goals, tackle, defend, anything. He will be in our reserves quite soon and we will protect him from there.'
Sterling, who is 15 next month, has already trained with the first-team. Mail
Newham Recorder - Rangers might be all-Wright for Joe!
05 November 2009
- Clapton boss Wilfred Thomas paid tribute to goalkeeper Joe Wright after his side's victory at home to Barking on Saturday but fears he may soon lose the talented teenager, writes IAIN LIDDLE.
- Wright broke into the side at the Spotted Dog Ground last season when he was just 16 and has looked more than comfortable in senior football.
- His displays have caught the attention of Championship big-spenders Queens Park Rangers, where he has been on trial for the past two weeks, and Thomas says he is turning into one of his key performers.
- "Joe stood out for me," said the Clapton chief. "He came into the side last year and has been playing better every week.
- "He's developed leaps and bounds in that time and QPR want to take a closer look at him...." Newham Recorder
Sheffield Wednesday Official Site - Ron Springett profile
- Sheffield Wednesday legend Ron Springett will be back at Hillsborough on Saturday as the Owls take on his former club Queens Park Rangers.
- The ex-Wednesday and England goalkeeper finally received a World Cup winner's medal in the summer after being part of England's successful 1966 squad. At the time of England's triumph only the 11 who played in the final were honoured.
- The London-born keeper joined Wednesday in March 1958 after then manager Eric Taylor agreed to let him live and train in London and commute up to Sheffield for games.
- Springett's arrival at Hillsborough signalled the end of the club's search for a quality goalkeeper. He was the fifth player to appear in goal for Wednesday in the 1957-58 season, a campaign that ultimately ended in relegation to the old Division Two.
- Ron immediately became first choice at Hillsborough and after helping the club return to the top flight he was also part of the first Wednesday team to take part in competitive European football.
- It wasn't long before Springett took the next step. He made his England debut against Northern Ireland at Wembley in November 1959 and was unchallenged for the national side until the emergence of Gordon Banks.
- He made his last appearance for England against Norway in June 1966 just before the World Cup finals began.
- 1966 was a bittersweet year for Springett, as well as being part of the World Cup squad he was also the goalkeeper for Wednesday in the FA Cup final which that the Owls lost 3-2 to Everton after leading 2-0.
- Ron left Hillsborough in the summer of 1967, moving back to QPR in a swap deal involving his younger brother Peter joining Wednesday. Later that year the club held a testimonial game for Ron with Wednesday fans contributing over £5,000 to his fund.
- He spent the second half of that match as a centre forward and had, a year before, scored four goals in Derek Wilkinson's testimonial. Ron went on to play nearly 50 more games for Rangers before retiring from football and setting up his own sports goods business in London. Sheffield Wednesday
Zesh Rehman best defender of South Asia
Associated Press of Pakistan - Pak coach dubs Zesh Rehman best defender of South Asia
LAHORE,Nov 5 (APP) Pakistan football foreign coach,George Kottan believes that Zeshan Rehman (Bradford City) and Atif Bashir (Bridgend Town FC) together are the best central defenders in South Asia. “Atif was outstanding during Colombo’s AFC Challenge Cup this year while I am really impressed with the potential of Zeeshan during Talent search Euro Tour 2009. Zesh had never represented Pakistan under me but I have records that he played SAFF Championship brilliantly at Karachi four years ago but missed the next at Maldives last year “,he said here on Thursday.
-This defender, favourites to join me for coming SAFF Championship mission alongwith Atif, has enormous talent and enough capability to re join Pakistan after playing his last international for Pakistan at Syria two years ago, blocking all Iraqis attacks in World Cup Qualifier 0 0 draw,he added.
Coach George Kottan was recently on European Tour on a mission to find talented Pakistani expatriates players to be a part of Pakistani teams for the 8th SAFF Championship (December 2009) and 11th South Asian Federation Games (Jan Feb 2010).
Nicknames Zesh, he is an English Pakistani football defender who was the first British Asian to start a Barclays Premier League match and is the first to have played in all four divisions of professional football in England. He was the first Pakistani international footballer to play professional
football in England. “I watched him play for Bardford in League Two game against Notts County at Meadow Lane and Carling League Cup tie
against Nottingham Forest . But I have to take more time to see Birmingham born defender in more actions so that his actual competency could be known as far as representation of national team is concerned”, added Kottan.
Meanwhile, Zesh, now 25, praised Pakistan Football Federation (PFF)’s President Faisal Saleh Hayat’s directives to ask Kottan monitor the European based footballers of Pakistani origin who are interested in playing for Pakistan and also those who have already played for Pakistan but are
still unknown to Kottan. “I also want to see the whole infrastructure of Pakistani football improve and see more players from other countries decide to represent Pakistan. My ambitions for Pakistan are to reach last 32 of World Cup one day Insha Allah. Hopefully, we can achieve this while I am still a player, if not then I would love to be the manager that does it”,he said.
“I am gaining more experience all the time and have now worked under nine managers and played for six clubs Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion, Norwich City, Queens Park Rangers, Blackpool and Bradford city during last six years. In terms of gaining more experience it was exactly what I needed and one of the reasons I moved around England”,he asserted. Associated Press of Pakistan
