McNally exit could pave way for Cook return

Change at Fulham brings winger's return back onto the agenda

QPR will step up their bid to re-sign Lee Cook after Fulham confirmed the departure of managing director David McNally.

For some time Rangers have believed that McNally's possible exit could pave the way for Cook to return to Loftus Road.

McNally presided over Fulham's signing of the winger from QPR last year and several other transfers, and he was involved in negotiations as the Rs attempted to capture Cook last season.

Rangers were unable to agree a fee for Cook's signing and also failed to secure a loan deal before Charlton stepped in and signed him on loan before the January transfer window closed.

More recently Rangers have discussed a loan move for Cook with a view to a £2.5million transfer only if he proves his long-term fitness following a knee injury.

But it was thought that in the event of McNally leaving, his successor could look to offload several players and Cook, who has not played in a competitive match for Fulham, may be among those available at a knockdown price.

Rangers are keen to sign at least one left-sided player this summer and are among the many clubs chasing Plymouth wide-man Peter Halmosi.

Plymouth want £2.5million for the Hungarian but may be forced to cut their losses because the 27-year-old has an option to buy out his contract later this year.

Middlesbrough's Adam Johnson has also been targeted but he now looks to be well out of Rangers boss Iain Dowie's reach unless Boro tie the player to a long-term contact and then agree to loan him out.

Dowie is currently scouting at the Campionato Primavera - an annual U20 tournament involving Italy's top clubs.Kilburn Times
