Newcastle Official Site Exclusive: Barron Unveiled As New Keeper Coach -By Craig Hope
PAUL Barron has been officially unveiled as the new goalkeeping coach of Newcastle United.
The 54-year-old arrives from North East rivals Middlesbrough and replaces former coach Terry Gennoe who was forced to leave the club last month because of a long-standing back problem.
Barron pulled on his gloves for the first time on Monday morning at the rather damp surroundings of United's Benton-based training ground.
But, despite the miserable weather on Tyneside, the former Arsenal stopper was all smiles when he spoke to Newcastle World TV as he revealed his delight following his Magpies move.
"I'm delighted to be here and can't wait to get down to work with our four keepers," he said in an exclusive interview.
"I was very happy at Middlesbrough but this is a great opportunity and I'm very much looking forward to it.
"Of course I know all about the quality of the goalkeepers at this club and it's great to work with top players.
"It's not just Shay and Steve, but Fraser Forster and Tim Krul are also very promising young goalkeepers.
"The potential at this club is huge and I'm looking forward to being part of it."
Barron joined Boro from Aston Villa when Steve McClaren took over as manager at the Riverside Stadium in 2001.
He has also previously coached at Coventry, QPR and West Brom.
Barron's playing career included spells with Plymouth Argyle, Arsenal, Crystal Palace, West Brom, Stoke City, QPR and Reading. Newcastle
PLYMOUTH HERALD - BREAKING NEWS: MANDARIC AND STAPLETON DENY OLLIE IS TO JOIN LEICESTER
.LEICESTER City owner Milan Mandaric has denied he is set to appoint Plymouth Argyle manager Ian Holloway as the new boss of his Championship club.
There was a swirl of speculation this afternoon that 44-year-old Holloway was close to being appointed by Leicester.
Argyle chairman Paul Stapleton has also told Herald Sport that the speculation is incorrect.
Mandaric said: "There is no truth in the rumour. I haven't contacted Plymouth and he hasn't been in my thoughts about getting the job."
Mandaric returned from a trip to California, United States this afternoon.
Leicester are seeking a successor to Gary Megson, who quit to take over at Bolton Wanderers last month, and Holloway has been linked with the vacancy over the past fortnight.
Stapleton said: "There is no truth it. I spoke to Ian at lunchtime today about loan transfers and contract talks for other players." Plymouth Herald
BBC-Leicester target Holloway as boss
Leicester chairman Milan Mandaric has made Plymouth boss Ian Holloway his top target to take the reins at the Walkers Stadium, BBC Sport understands.
The Foxes have been looking for a new manager since October when Gary Megson left after six weeks to take charge at Premier League Bolton Wanderers.
Joe Royle, Graeme Souness and Peter Reid have been interviewed, but Mandaric has now turned to Holloway.
The 44-year-old became Plymouth manager in June 2006 after five years at QPR.
The Pilgrims have been in excellent form in the Championship and lie just outside the play-offs. BBC
