SHEFFIELD UNITED OFFICIAL SITE - [Jon Stead] - Tlking has to stop
Blades striker Jon Stead says the team must 'stop talking and start doing' - beginning against QPR at Bramall Lane on Saturday.
Stead knows things won't be easy though against the in-form 'R's but insists United must start making tracks in the push for promotion to the promise land:
"They are driving up the league pretty quickly at the moment and it goes to show what a decent run of results can achieve. No doubt they will come here full of confidence.
"We must stop saying what we are going to do and start doing it on the pitch. We must start performing, beginning on Saturday, and there is definitely room to slip into the play-off places."
The former Sunderland man finished by calling for his team-mates to make the Lane a difficult place to come, acknowledging that attacking, free-flowing footballing is what the public pay their money to see:
"We need to make Bramall Lane a fortress and must stake a claim for promotion come the end of the season. We have to attack teams from the off which is what the fans want to see." Sheffield United
QPR OFFICIAL SITE - THE FRIDAY PREVIEW: BLADES
Pre-season title favourites Sheffield United are the Championship's big under-achievers at present.
United currently occupy 16th place in the second tier following their demotion from the top-flight at the end of last season and with record signing James Beattie still sidelined with a knee injury, the Blades are blunt heading into the second half of the campaign.
The former Everton ace, 29, is the Blades top-scorer in the Championship with 13 goals, but he is set to be missing for at least the next two weeks of the season, providing boss Bryan Robson with yet another headache.
"It is a massive blow because all season James has scored goals," admitted the Blades gaffer recently.
Headaches have been all too frequent for Robson since his arrival at Bramall Lane in the summer.
Filling the void left by former boss and United hero Neil Warnock was never going to be a straight-forward task, but the Sheffield United hierarchy would have surely envisaged heading into 2008 in the top half of the table, as opposed to the bottom.
An opening day draw with Colchester United set the alarm bells ringing and although a fine victory against West Bromwich Albion provided hope, defeats against Watford and Championship newcomers Scunthorpe United saw United's best laid plans lie in tatters.
A solitary league victory in September did little to appease the doom-mongers in the Steel City and a carbon copy October saw United slump to within touching distance of the bottom three.
But a positive November, which saw United register 10 points from a possible 15, gave Robson time and although December failed to hit such heady heights, victory against Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup third round last weekend, at least provides fresh hope for the new calendar year.
United have been relatively quiet on the transfer front since the window opened on January 1st, with Manchester United starlet Lee Martin the only addition to the squad, although the 20 year-old is currently suspended and will miss Saturday's showdown with the R's. QPR
