National soccer team coach Dror Kashtan left the stadium in Ashkelon satisfied yesterday, following a 4-2 victory over a Select XI of foreigners who play in the Premier League.
Kashtan, who was forced to name a squad for yesterday's match that excluded all Israelis playing abroad and all Hapoel Tel Aviv players...Even though this was just a friendly match, Kashtan left very satisfied. ..In a surprise move, Kashtan told the nation that he was sorry. "I want to take this opportunity to apologize for the match against England," he said. "Everything that was written about the national squad was justified. Israeli players need to give a more respectable performance, and I apologize in front of everyone. The gaps between Israel and England exist, but we did not have to play the way we did."
Kashtan knows that he must return from Croatia with a respectable result - or at least a minimal loss. "We will improve, and in Croatia we will fix what we did in England, for Israeli soccer in general and for the national team in particular," he said.
The national team coach also criticized Israeli soccer and his squad. "There is a problem with heat in Israel, and there is also a problem with physical fitness. [Israeli soccer] is not at the European level with regard to the pace of the game, either in our Premier League or in the national squad."
Kashtan has decided to call up Queens Park Rangers forward Ben Sahar for next week's Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia. However, he decided not to call up Robert Colautti, who is currently playing with Borussia Monchengladbach of the Bundesliga but is not match-fit. Nor does he plan to call up Maor Buzaglo and Itai Shechter.
After yesterday's match, Kashtan explained that players on the squad will play only if they show commitment to the team. Regarding his decision on Colautti, he said: "Colautti is not able to make a contribution. We need players who are in good physical shape."... Haaretz
